I work with my sister-in-law. 'Job descriptions' were laid out from the very beginning and it's worked well for us. There are many others here that have worked with family for decades - they'll have better advice, I'm sure!

Not personally but I know of some parent-child, spouses or sibling real estate partnerships. I imagine there are many different types. Good luck.

treat him as you would any other team member.... my daughter has been with me for 20 years... and now she runs the show.... I do the marketing and make the phone ring....and I charge her and team members a referral fee for all transactions.... it's a good income and I have flexibility... so, if you work it right, it will be a Blessing to you...

Yes, My husband and i. Very clearly defined roles within the company. I am mostly sales, he is mostly property management. Sometimes they overlap, but we know who ultimately has the responsbility for what.

I have worked with my daughter since 2010. We shared an office with the company we were with for 8 years. I opened my own business late in 2017 and she is the broker.
It has worked for us. There are some things she is more comfortable doing and vice versa. So we built on those things and it works for us.

Shirley,
Ron and I have been in business together since before we were married. We know our strenghts and we compliment each other. When we taught seminars, some of the attendees related better to me and others related better to him. The same in our commercial practice. That gave us more market share. A

The overwhelming temptation is to impose or 'make sure he listens to you' oversight the prime objective. This is the MOM not letting go. Don't do it.
You think you know the answer to this question. "What does your son want to do?"
Ask him "Why is working in real estate important to you?" Or, based on your intimate knowledge, the more important question may be, "Why is working with your MOM important to you?"
That's the easy part.
The first 3 responses will be about how this decision affect him. They are all the wrong answer.
The next 2 or 3 responses will be about how this decision affect those around him, his community or SOI. These also are the wrong answers.
When you get to response 5, 6 and 7 you are finally at the real purpose.
This IS his "Why." Now, your choice is whether to make the way for the eagle to soar by preparing the way for him to walk into the fullness of his greater purpose.
Here is an example of how such a conversation may sound.
Brad. You trust me right? So, this will make you a little uncomfortable but please trust me to know the outcome will be beneficial to us both. Will you give me 15 minutes to ask you 7 probing, intelligent questions about this choice?"
"Brad, why is it important to you to work in real estate?"
"Well, Mom I've watched you for 20 years and it seems like interesting work."
"Wow. I didn't realize you were watching so closely. Brad, what is important to you about doing interesting work?"
"Mom, I would go nuts doing the same repetitive work. I think I work at my best when the work I do is varied."
"I see. Brad, what is import to you about working at your best?"
And you keep squeezing until you get to the real purpose.
At is upon knowing the real purpose that one has the core strength to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. The 'greater purpose' creates greater achievement.

I know numerous agents who are parent/child, husband/wife, siblings. Like any relationship, some will work and some will not. Real estate relationships require patience, understanding, forgiveness, and all to stuff acticipated for any type of relationship.

I had my great-niece working with me for awhile, As an assistant
we had a few issues at first but once the rules were clear and she was getting her feet under her it became a really good experience. I wish she was still with me but Alaska was not for her. I miss her!
You can both learn from each other. It is important to remember the young have fresh ideas, lots of energy and are more tech connected. He can be a real asset to you and you can be the same to him
Go for it with Gusto!
