Depends on who and what.

If it was inadvertent, I might let it go. Deliberately disrespectful or negligent, I might not patronize them again.

Malicious, I might threaten to take them to the mattresses, and hope that that threat would be sufficient.

I've taken contractors to the governing board and it's amazing how quickly they become sweet when facing a license suspension while hearing is being scheduled.

I guess that would depend on the situation and the degree that it impacted my family, business or finances negatively and chances of the battle bringing about anything positive.  And I would also factor in,  is it worth the time and energy to escalate the scene to put the other party's ethics "in"?

It depends on what type of problem it was and how expensive/extensive. I am such a pacifist that it is rare for me to complain but there were two instances over the last 15 years where I did.

First was when we had tile installed throughout our condo. We worked with a local flooring store that was well known so did not expect any issues. When the installer arrived, he looked at the job and the amount of tile then informed us that he estimated we were short at least 200 sf. A call to the owner resulted in him agreeing to provide the remaining tile at no charge to us since his employee measured wrong. There was no reason to report him to the BBB and it ended well.

We had a bad experience with our former insurance company when we had to file a damage claim. It took way too long to get an adjuster to look at the damage then they dragged their feet processing the claim, etc. Finally, I called the State Insurance Commission's help line (free for residents) and they investigated and got it resolved for us.

First I give the opportunity to confess then repent.

Second, if warranted and I have suffered REAL damage, I hire an attorney.

Third, I make it my mission to make them infamous. Just ask NeverEver Bank of Clearwater Florida.(RIP)

I DO NOT play patty-cake by trying to solve the issue inside the sandbox. As we all know, 'assoication' wrist slaps are laughable. It is the same with BBB.

CAUTION: allowing 'association' processes to work to a conclusion could cause the Statute of Limitation to make your choices for you.

I suppose it would depend on the circumstances.  If it's a restaurant or grocery store I would never go back a second time.  My husband boycotts one of the local ice cream stands because the server was rude. (That was probably 5 years ago.)

Depends on the situation. A local cleaners - Lee's Cleaners -  ruined a $150 jacket and refused to pay damages. The owner accused me of getting breast enhancement while yelling at me and her husband said I had gained weight from the time I dropped it off to when I picked it up. I turned them into the BBB - they got the message LOUD and CLEAR! I still warn people of their business methods.

The BBB complaint is a waste of time and energy. If there is a license involved and the error is egregious, I would contact the state licensing board but if you are also a licensee the complaint goes nowhere.

Paul, in 2008, I drug two CEOs from two major corporations before Congress. They had done something that caused my business to take a hit and they wouldn't correct it. Oh, they did, but only after they had to testify why they didn't act when they realized they made a mistake. One one of other occasion, I had an attorney fired from a major FL law firm for leaving a couple profanity laden voicemails on my voice recorder. I think he thought I'd buckle in fear. He was wrong.

Most small local stuff I just stop giving them my money. I'm not silent about bad service, but I only speak if asked. I did get a local broker fired from Fannie Mae for forging my client's signature on a contract and then swearing he didn't. He did.

It really depends on the level of "wronged".  I reported several contractors over the years - one was fined $750 which I thought was a joke. He disputed it which caused a trial of sorts with the State Contractors License Board. I had to appear.  He lost big time and the judge slammed him with a $7,500 fine and required him to do other things.  It is a time suck for sure.
