I would have done what the Holdens did. The kids seemed nice and they made a deal in good faith, they just didn't know they weren't making it with the owner. I would have also enlisted them to assist me in stinging Amanda so the cops could catch her. I'm sure the little bitch would love to rent them another place, right? ūüėą

I would certainly aleret the DA of the crime committed as should the trespassers. Hopefully, the perps can be brought to justice, otherwise they will continue with the scheme.

First I would look into how I'm handling the access to my property. The story sounds off to me - like who gave them keys or other access to the home.

What to do?  It really depends on the circumstances of the encounter.  Could be something a lot more serious than the one told in your local newspaper.

The first story, I think was handled well.

The second story, that's another topic.  5.5m followers or not, if they're abusing the house and causing a public disturbance I'd kick them out for violating the lease and if the cops refused to do their job (as they did in this case) the neighbors and I would be giving the Chief and any news media an earful the next day!  I have no problem turning off the power, locking out the water, etc.

I'll have to admit, the Holden's handled that a lot better than many would have. What a mess. Craigslist is the scammers site of choice.

If they are found IN the house, my first issue would be access control, NOT who took advantage of the naive.  You want these to be stranded in the driveway, not inside.

CL bends over backwards warning users the site is polluted with criminals and cops telling their lies.

You may need to defy those who promise to look after the agents best interests and BRAND the images your association syndicates and likely the source of the fraudlent images. Easy access to this information and the immense difficulty the association creates to prevent agents from protecting their clients by not syndicating just could be the root of the problem. Our own peeps and franchise and broker are close to every problem in real estate.

In this case, find out how long they think they are staying, then weight the consequences of calling the murder squad (911 in Tampa) or just let the time expire and they go home.  THEN install better access controls.

I did summer rentals at Hampton Beach Nh for 2 decades. I will tell you all our rental agreements had a clause with a maximum occupancy. It also called for an immediate violation of said agreemnet and required them to vacate immediately with  a full loss of the securuity deposit. Only twice in 29 years did we have to throw anyone out. The biggest was 2 moms who rented for a week in July. ALthough they said they were families rented for their 2 daughters and 2 friends which turned in 12 girls which attracted a good 24 boys. Needless to say a call from the neighbor got me there to evict everyone. The second was a family who left early due to rain and left their teenage boys to say teh last day alone. I pulled up to teh couch in the driveway as they waved to passing cars  in the rain. The family did pay for a new couch.
