I prefer to be my own kind of "Smart" and rely upon my brain to do the heavy lifting. Having a plan B is its own kind of Smart.

Use tech for it's convenience, but make sure you never give it complete control.

There are lots of ways not to have the internet down. You have to just maybe tether from your phone as an example. Being tech savvy helps also. 

I always have a plan B but has nothing to do with Nest products. Hey, silly me, I use a KEY.

Saw an article today about how the Nest thermostats (with their cameras) allowed prior owners to watch the new owners after a house was sold.

My advice is (of course) to not use these devices.  If you do use them, know that technology fails, so always have a backup.  For these devices to be designed without a manual lock is negligent.

I try not to depend on any 1 company for anything so this doesnt happen. 

I've been manually "locked out" of my house-and used my ingenuity to get back in. Never technologically locked out of it.

I was once locked out, when walking the dogs.  I forgot to bring a key and my garage door wouldn't open because of an electrical outage that occured.  Not a happy camper.

Yes, this just happened a few months ago. My garage door opener on my car wouldn't work. They garage door keypad wouldn't work. The garage door app wouldn't work. I had to call a locksmith as I didn't keep a house key with me. Now I keep a house key on hand.

No, I keep a key in the cazr and one in a fake prinkler head.
