We go to the luxury theater The LOT CINEMA / RESTAURANT / BAR / CAFÉ. Typically 50 or less in the theater, leather over sized recliner chairs that make a love seat for couples.
I pay 12.00 per ticket and usually have a $60.00 dollar food bill for table service of 2 rounds of cocktails, flat breads, gourmet food and popcorn.
We go once per month and love it. That will never replace sitting at home in front of a TV. We love going out, the luxury and relaxton of the whole experience.

Thirty years ago we thought video stores would put them out of business, but they are still going strong, apparently it is about more than the movies.

As much as we don't want the change, I agree that we'll probably see the big theatres phase out....much like Blockbuster Video did!
We are seeing more smaller theatres that are more like the dinner theatres of yesteryear but, with a movie, dinner, bar menu, etc. here in our area. I do think those will stand the test of time.

I used to love going to movie theaters. I loved everything about the experience - the waiting for the movie to start, listening to other's laughter, weeping, or whatever. What fun. I went quite often...
It's been a long time since I've seen a movie in a theater. Partly because the movies being made now just don't capture my attention, but also because the experience was sullied with way too many noisy people. I don't want to hear someone else ripping into a bag of something, chewing noisily, texting on their phone, etc.
Now I can see a good movie in my own home, with my own snacks and drinks if I want them.
I think there will be movies theaters in the near term but eventually they will fizzle out.

Out here the older ones are upgrading. The standard is leather recliners now. For me though, I classify each preview for a movie as either 1) Theater, 2) Redbox, or 3) Netflix/Amazon Prime
Something like Godzilla or the last John Wick movie that my friends are going to want to see as a group, that's #1. Something that looks like it has amazing sound and needs to be best seen on the big screen, like Top Gun, also a #1.
Avengers part 2 that's 3 hours long... Netflix!
Something that looks good, but I don't want to wait 6 months to see, Redbox.

A place that makes money on a per head basis, such as a theater, will not fail because of the crowds. In fact, the crowds are evidence that it is succeeding.

That's a good question, Richie. Don't know that I have an answer. As a senior when I go to movies (which is very rare), I go when I get a major senior citizen discount, so am less sensitive to the pricing issue. And I never buy anything to eat at the theatre. I either eat prior to going or after the movie.

The consumer has way too many options to the $5 box of Milk Duds.
It is that nonsense that insures their place right next to Block Buster.
Not long ago (last week) I drove by an actual and functioning drive-in theater. I thought they were gone. There are only 22 drive-in theaters in the USA.
Netflix is my drug of choice.

We used to go to the movies at least once a week. Things have changed and I'd rather watch a movie from home after the experience with the angry, yelling, screaming, spitting little man and his wife who thought we were in their seats on a Sunday afternoon at a matinee. We weren't!

The movie theater industry is fighting back with deluxe seats, better food, special pricing offers, combo theater/restaurants. Going to a move can be a fun event not rivaled by watching at home.

I probably have been to a movie less than 8 times in the last 15 years. I love movies. I don't like the prices. I wait and record or buy the DVD and watch on my big screen TV at home.
I thought theaters would have died years ago but they keep building more. As long as people pay high prices for tickets, candy, popcorn and parking, Hollywood will keep manking movies.
