Sometimes it pays dividends to just listen. They are obviously frustrated and are affected by the division caused by the media and politicians. OR Simply look at them, smile, bat your eyes and say with a giggle in your voice MAGA!!! every time they make a political comment...lol

Of course, I'm simply joking

I would totally ignore them, listen, DO NOT ENGAGE, never let them know how I feel, and laugh on my way to the bank.

I actually have a very close client that has bought and sold several houses from me over the years. I visit her often and she goes on and on in a totally different vein than my personal opinions. She has NO CLUE that I don't agree with her. What? Like I'm going to say something profound and change her mind? Not gonna happen in this political climate.

Just smile and wave, boys, just smile and wave.

I my client wanted talk about their recent new car purchase, trip to Asia, religious or political beliefs, I would listen politely and remind them of the reason that we are a team and ask them to focus on the business at hand.

My job is to service their real estate needs...not argue, convert, change their opinion.

If their speech was hateful, spiteful or angry, I would have to make a decision as to whether it was necessary for the two of us to part company.

Life offers many opportunities.  Should I stay or should I go is but one.  Each person makes that decision based on the question: "what's in it for me?".  There is not a right or a wrong answer in my opinion.  Just what works best for that person, that situation, that time.

I would listen for a few minutes and then give the person a very strong acknowledgement (I understand what you are saying and why you feel that way - I got it).  If that didn't do it (and it probably wouldn't but it's fast and works some of the time), then after giving the acknowledgement I would say something like, I have an idea, let's go for a walk. And once we got going I would point out things and ask the person to look at things in the environment. Look at the building - while pointing. When they look and indicate that they see it (whether that indication is verbal or nod or some other body motion indication that they have done it) then give them a "thank you" or a "good" and pick something else. Mix things up, near and far, big and small. Maybe within in a couple minutes, maybe a 1/2 hour or more the guy will come out of the "problem" or "situation" he is stuck in that keeps him going on and on pointlessly about whatever he's going on and on about. He/she is stuck in something it's bothering them and they are trying make it go away and feel better. If they could spot the truth (the exact time, place form and event) the situation would blow but they can't so they talk about it in an effort to find the truth. The take a walk and look at things handling doesn't "blow" the problem but it doesn't get them out of it so they can behave rationally for a little while.

If the above makes any sense to you - you will begin to understand the extent of the harm the media spreads through society with all of their half truths or straight up lies. Such actions do stick people in their heads as incorrect or partially correct data gets folks looking for answers and the truth when they are not provided.

I'd have a come to Jesus chat and tell them that they need to focus on real estate to accomplish their goals, since its REALTORS and lenders not politicians getting his sale done. I ignore my clients when they insist, I simply allow awkward silence and never reply. I love that move, I can handle the silence, they typically can't. That usually shuts them up.

When I've run across somebody like this I simply say something like - am I here to sell your house?  Yes?  Then let's get to it.

I don't engage in mindless political rants!!! And of course it's even more worthless when the point is to sell a home, not agree with the seller on politics. One time I said.....this isn't going to work.  Closed my computer and left.  He walked me out and apolized up and down about the co-seller's behaviour. The gal was ranting as I walked out.....a real case. Never looked back. I don't need that craziness in my life! Not a chance.

My market is very different than the rest of the country. Most of the inventory is co-op's- where you need to pass a board interview to be approved to buy an apartment. Buyers should never be talking politics unless it's in total privacy- because the walls have ears. You don't know which nosey neighbor might be hearing and talking to the board (or are on the board themselves) about various buyers. Case in point (for illustration only- please don't elaborate on the politics of the situation) - when Rudy Guiliani's co-op was recently raided by the FBI- next thing you know his neighbor is being interviewed by every media outlet about all the things that were being taken out of his apartment.  Even if asked during a board interview, I advise my buyers to state that their political views are private and are not looking to draw any kind of attention to the building (if it's possible for the client to take this position...if they work in a role that puts them in a spotlight as it relates to politics that is an entirely different discussion).

Because of the extreme intimate relationship that is involved with the co-op process, it's important to work with clients you like- and not just trying to chase the money. Even if a client is buying a condo- so much of the process is similiar (but condo's can't reject buyer's while a co-op can) - it's still important to work with clients you can at least be comfortable around.
