Interesting.  Unlawful?  I don't know? I believe that is governed locally. I suspect mail carriers, emergency responders may be delayed without a visible address.

On the other hand, the ladies and drug dealers will know by the one house without an address.

I don't know if it's "unlawful", but seems a might stupid, too.  It makes it very difficult for emergency vehicles to find you... when seconds count.

Laws tend to be local, county or state-based in these types of situations I imagine.  As for shady things, I like trees.  I don't think unlawfulness ever enter the thoughts of Joyce Kllmer as he wrote.  Of course, I don't know this for sure...just guessing.

I don't know why that would be a problem, except when it comes to mail or emergency services finding you.

When it comes to real estate, we have an option to not display the property's street address online.  I had one seller in 14 years that wanted to take that option to not display the street address.  Cue the angry call from a look alike neighboring home's owner.  "Get my property off your website now!"  It was odd.

I would expect that's a local municipality issue as to whether it's unlawful. In Charlotte you must display a house number on a residential or commercial building on the front of the building and there is code requiring a miimum size. But don't know why you think it's shady if it is legal.

that's required for safety issues.....in my town, you cannot get a certificate of occupancy unless the house number is visible and attached to the front of the house....

I can’t quote you the statue but I’m 99% sure we have at least a county ordinance that requires house numbers.

It would seem that those who might remove their house number have some nefarious intent but maybe I’m just friends with too many cops.

Not sure why anyone would want to do that unless they're trying to "hide" from something.  It's not that hard to figure out with the neighboring addresses and Google Maps.

Not unlawful here. Many people have PO Boxes and no mailbox or address at their house. Others just have address on mailbox out by road, but not on the house. Others will have address painted on the curb at street. Other private lanes all have mailboxes lines up at end of lane closest to main paved street with addresses on the boxes, but not on their houses. Many houses here aren't even visible from the street so no one could see it anyway. EMS can easily look up address on county website and pinpoint location of houses even when there is no mailbox or address posted on home.

I don't think it's unlawful but, why would you do it? Part of the building requirements is having the address on the home, visible from the street. That's just for the final occupancy requirement. There's nothing that says the homeowners can't remove the numbers though.

Again, why would you do it? You have to consider emergency facilitation and if you're a landlord, I would insist upon having that number visible to avoid any future litigation.

Not sure about the legality ... but I'm still stuck on WHY would a homeowner not want their address displayed?  Not good for the mail carrier or emergency situations.  Time to rethink this one.

I am not aware of it being unlawful, but that is likely a jurisdictional issue.  Personally, I try to make mine as visible as possible so that first responders can find me if I ever need them.  Plus, on a more "average day" note, I want my deliveries to get to my home and those title couriers to deliver my commission checks with the greatest of ease!  :)

I did a quick internet search and while it appears that each property must have an address, I did not find a specific mandate that the address be displayed on the property.

Just a thought: does removing the posted address from a property make it invisible? Answer: NO. It just makes it harder to find.

I believe the visibility of house addresses are probably dictated by local zoning. For us, with new construction a final occupancy is not given unless the address is up and visible.

Here there are subdivisions that require it, but I don't think it's a zoning regulation, however for emergency services it's wise and our local fire department sells signs that are reflective that we recommend people buy even if it's a second home with no mail box.

Not only should the numbers be removed, the box on the street should vanish and the owner name obscured via an LLC.

If for no other reason but to keep real estate agent marketing stuff out of sight.

There are those that simply want to be left alone. Present common practice makes that impossible so some take measures that should encourage others to leave them alone.
