Home is where the hearth is.

I had a friend, in high school (back in the Jurassic period) whose family discovered an old family cemetery in their own back yard.  That was a little traumatic.

Yes. It's actually fairly common in this area. They have no real affect on value of neighboring homes. Many people these days are in support of preserving old cemeteries. People's attitudes were different 25+ years ago. There is a cemetery right on the border line of a lot I'm getting ready to list. I attend and perform cemetery workshops a few times a years where people actually pay to attend so they can get hands on training on how to clean, maintain, and repair gravestones and monuments. I'm attending 2 coming up soon. One in Bedford VA OCT 3rd, and one in Frederick MD OCT 7th. Heater Family Graveyard in Lovettsville VA. Known burials are five Heaters, Eve Sager, and Nancy and Philip Sry.

It happens a lot in this area.  At Capital City Country Club here in Tallahassee, one of the fairways is closed; last year they found a number of graves from when that property was a plantation.

Can't recall one being 'discovered'. But I did have a gorgeous home with guest house +++ on Paradise Valley right next to a cemetary. Very quiet neighbors!  Sold in 2 days, not because of the neighbors next door :) Just an awesome property.

I have not had such an experience. My market is mostly urban and suburban properties.

There have been instances of construction being halted in some locations due to uncovering evidence of old Native American burial sites.

Just sold a 3 acre place with rows and rows of very quiet neighbors. Some homes, farmsteads have a few graves from family plots from long ago or even reserved right to bury ashes near other family members. No big deal. Respect the wishes of the RIP and death, it happens sooner or later to all of us.

I have a friend that has an old family plot in his front yard. Off to the side, but still front yard.

There is also a resident that died a few years ago in an affluent area. She has herself buried in front of her front porch. I have not been up to the house, as it is on some acreage, to witness things for myself. The house did sell, with her permanent residence on the property.

In my city Scottsdale Arizona we have a cemetery right on the city border with Tempe. Right in front of the cemetery is a sign that says, "Welcome to

Scottsdale: The Most Livable City" I guess people are dying to live here! Just saying...Jeff

nope, sold land once that had one that was discovered.  The seller paid the buyer back for a half acre and public access is always open for graves.

I don't think you can sell a cemetary per se. Must remove the 'residents' at least in IL.

Never happened to me. I imagine it might be tricky to value/sell such a home due to possible pre-conceived notions or feng shui considerations on the part of some buyers.

Not uncommon esp. in the earliest settled areas of the country, before alternative burials were available.

Checkout findagrave.com in Virgina or West Virginia.  Lots of cemeteries with under 6 markers named for a family.

I sold a home several years ago with a Cemetery in the back yard...It had maybe 10-12 stones from the mid 1800's and a very well built enclosure around it...The church up the street from it maintained it and the buyer was fine with the whole thing.

No but, I did show a home near a cemetary the other day. Told my retirees that at least they wouldn't have far to go for their next chapter!! 🤣
