A successful 1st year in real estate?  That a great question!
What YOU must do is define what a successful 1st year looks like to you.  Since being a real estate agent is EXACTLY like owning your own business, all you need to do is refer to the goals listed in your real estate agent business plan. You do have a business plan to guide you in developing your business, right?
Here are some of the elements in your business essential to implementing the correct strategy to establish your business. Be aware, in many unfortunate situations, an agent believes they can rely entirely on the franchise and broker for all their business guidance. The outcome of that is 'dime-a-dozen' agents who, if lucky become survivors not thrivers.
In your business plan, your 'product' is identified based on the environment you are in. For some the produt is services in condos or 55+ communities or SFR, or 2nd homes or military housing or manufactured housing or new construction. For many agents it is a blend of many of these types.
Next is'who' are the people who have great interest in the product?
Then, 'where' do they live?
How will you reach them?
What is your promise?
How many contacts will be needed to create the required conversions, that result in closed transactions?  This is a marketing cost, (marketing is your REAL business)  which is crucial to proper budgeting and capitalization.
Now, comes what resources are available to you?
If you possess a big library of contacts, like 6,000 regional are at the 20 yard line and ready to score BIG. No list?  Direct mail and grass roots with relevant CTA will prove golden.
How about a collaboration network to supplement or replace the contact list? 
Finally, now that you have the real estate agent business plan idea, make sure you choose a broker who is ready to implement your business instead of their plan for you. If the brokers systems have ANY merit the broker will COMMIT to getting you involved in a transaction within 30 days of signing.
It is YOUR business. As the CEO you will need to take responsibility and make the hard decisions and commitments. You will be SHOCKED regarding the number of brokers who understand the agent runs their own business and have such low expectation they don't even ask to see your business plan. You need to ask yourself' "Is this the partner I want?"

Follow these suggestions and it is your hand that controls the tiller guiding your business where you need it to be.

Network, network, network! Spend at LEAST 40 hours each week in your business...and remember, it IS a business, treat it as such. This means setting short- and long-term goals and that will help you focus on what you need to do to build your business.

Put together a database, reach out to your sphere to let them know you are in the business and keep up with them each and every month. Do call time, open houses and preview every property that hits the market in the areas that you want to dominate. 

Build your brand and share your successes with your sphere - including sharing your blogs with them.

Remember, you have a license, you are learning how to fly with those untrained real estate wings. Watch your spending, study other successful agents, brokers in your market and think what if I was the buyer, the seller. What would I want and need from my real estate professional. Do that.

Listings are King, inventory is everything for something to sell. Farm, canvass around COPVID19 limitations, hunt down FSBO's, check out places with lawns are not mowed, talk to neighbors, family and friends because you are always hungry for listings to sell little blue agent. You need to add a mug shot to be not lost in the crowd. Be tenderhearted, tough skinned and remember, real estate is an all consuming sport.
