This question came from one of my first-time buyer couples, and asked how long people stay in their homes.   It depends....right Michael Jacobs ?

Ah, Joan - you are going to have me go deep into my memory bank.  I do remember when I started a new job in Washington DC and I lived in company-paid housing for about six weeks(does that count?).  The longest, likely the home where I grew up - from about three years old until I left for La Jolla California --- just short of 18 years as I recall.  Three states and the District of Columbia.  I have run out of fingers. . .

1. No real short times that would get anyone's attention. I'd say one year as I assume you're not counting temporary living situations.

2. Longest time is my current home: 15 consecutive years.

3. I haven't lived in all that many different homes... and are you talking about entire lifetime or as an adult? That would make a difference. In my lifetime, probably 16 homes. As an adult post college... probably 11.

For me, the shortest time in a home would be a temporary rental situation.  For example, in college, I live in an apartment for less than a year.

Our longest time is in our current home. Almost 26 years.

I will only list homes that I owned.  If I included rentals, it would be in the dozens.

1.  One year

2.  15 years

3.   I lost count!   Maybe 6?

The shortest time will be three years for the house we are currently in.  The longest was 20 years and we have lived in three homes since 1990.

I think I lived in 6 homes before that.

Shortest time in any one was 5 months.

First home, less than 2 years. Had to buy bigger home and do over carriage house to create real estate office. Raised four kids in that home as single full time dad with real estate office a brisk walk, a 32 foot long commute to work. 40 years here and counting. Lake home bought 36 years ago. Family farm bought 20 years ago. Extra neighboring lake log cottage purchased 5 years ago. Oldest daughter, husband who telecommutes to Nike job and grand child number 2 are next door and work/vacationing there now.  So shortest, under 2 years. Longest time 40 years. Haved "lived" in homes I bought and owned number ... 3 places.

1.  A week or so back in college.

2. I have some that I have owned for over 30 years.

3. That would take some figuring to get even close to that number.  My wife says we are never moving again, yet she still looks at the listings that I have sent to her.

We have owned four homes.  The first home was the shorttest one owned at two years.  The third one was the second longest at fifteen years.  We have been in our current home for the longest period of time at sixteen years.

Wow. An eyeopener.  Between immigrating from Germany to Canada to US, I moved around quite a bit, pretty much all in my youth. Now settled in Carmel-by-the-Sea since 1995.
