I don't think so Tony Lewis

I get more leads and business from my website than I do from social media.

Plenty of agents still have websites, I suppose the more tools you have in your bag the better off you'll be. Exposure is the name of the game

Not at all, but a website being used as a vanity/landing page is already obsolete.  It's got to rank, have lead capture, customer funnels, and IDX feed to keep customers engaged on the site.

A website is still a great resource, but a website for the sake of having a website is pointless, you've got to use the tool.

Just like the rest of our tools - you get out of it what you put into it kind of thing. If you put zero into a website and have your biz centered around otherthings - for that person  a RE website could possibly be useless and at least functionally obsolete because it's doing nothing for them and they doing nothing for it.

Why would you ask that? Your own website adds a ton of credibility to your standing as a professional. I don't refer business to agents who don't have their own robust website (and I don't mean a webpage on a brokerage's site).

It is your 24/7 business card.

I will AGREE that our sites have taken a hit with the popularity of the big 4. I'm not even sure I believe their supposed numbers on visitors. I think that shoppers think those are just easier to navigate & look sharper than many agent sites.

Am I as a consumer going to visit John Doe's site or go to Z?

If one is active in any practice, a web site is like a business card & should be treated that way. However, as you pointed out, there are forces at work constantly that may change the way we interact on just about everything

No...

I don't believe that they will be obsolete.

I do almost all my business off my website because my target buyer is out of town.

What I do think what will eventually be obsolete is listing agents due to the opportunity for sellers to list on various places without a realtor...

We've found the majority of buyers go directly to Realtor.ca which is free and shows all listings in Canada except Quebec.  Realtors get free leads interested in their listings.   Sellers look for corporate websites and then follow-up with specific Realtors.

Many businesses have ONLY a FB presense. Many busineesses succeed by providing NO Customer service but encourages and supports FB user groups.
However, it is important to understand when thousands of dollars are in play, consumers do behave differently than lower cost engagements.
What they WILL do is seek no less than 3 and often 5 points of validation. If a real estate professional can do that without a website, that means they are more tuned into their audience habits than most.
An agent website is a great tool but not when used as most have implemented. Those $30 a month 'shiny thing' websites do  not offer the agility to get in front of the needs of the shelter seeking population.
The moral of the story is, 'The horse you feed will win the race."
The choice is which 'false news' channel will the agent choose to participate. In this socieity of consentual delusion, we tend to choose or create the messge streams that make us feel the way we want to feel.
I think the agents website is just one of the five pillars of validation available. Use it wisely.

I think some agents could get by without a website, but it would depend on what other platform(s) they would use. I have seen many websites that suck and could easily be replaced with more effective technology.

My opinion of course.

The future of marketing is website/SEO. Everyone I know pulls out their phone to answer their question. If I google "Top producing real estate agents near me", I am going to focus heavily on the top 3 posts. Invest your money into an SEO company that knows what they're doing. With time, organic SEO leads are free!
