Being an instructor myself for many years I liked to keep them updated on new marketing ideas as well as how to build a sustainable referral business. I don't see this out there in my world.

I think it would be great if a required CE class was:
"Running a Business 101",
"Emotional Intelligence for the new & the transactional agent"
and finally -
"how to recharge in real estate and unplug from the 24/7 myth".
So many agents do not know how to run the business they recently got licensed for, they think it's a job. Also, too many tantrums, burnouts and rude behavior out there.

Federal Income Tax:
Paying/withholding Federal income taxes quarterly. Understanding that your Broker won't give you W2 and W4 forms (unless you are salaried). Receiving and giving Form 1099, and other relevant Tax forms.
Insurance:
Having the proper automobile liablity insurance (even if you don't put Buyers in your car, there are situations where your present auto policy might not cover you).
What is Errors & Omissions insurance? Do I need it?

Since most of us are Baby Boomers, we have probably 20 years left and a class in PROBATE will be great while we still have a chance to help others and earn a commission too.

Sales skills - I'm not talking about marketing and advertising (those are important, but different). I'm talking about how to actually close the sale (i.e. trial closes, closing questions, objections, etc.) There are not enough classes taught on that.
If you are targeting newer agents - Things I wish I had known (and done) in my first few years
If you are targeting brokers who run an office - recruiting agents and managing agents

You have some great suggestions here so far, Tammy Lankford,
I am not personally looking for classes. I do all my own research and self-teach. I also have attorneys I consult with on matters that could potentially be landmines.

A process explaining the stages of the transaction to a buyer or seller that is not normally savvy. Also, how to choose an agent. Communication skills including body language. How far one can go without practicing law. I want to emphasize that whatever is taught, it is presented at 6th grade level and includes Q & A

I can't remember the last time something I wanted to learn about came anywhere close to giving me a CE credit.
Out here, CEs can only come from state approved vendors giving state approved courses. They aren't covering anything remotely related to what I want to learn.

I like case studies. I think it's good to learn from practical experiences and to see how some situations were handled. Of course it has to be tied into whatever theme or topic you are presenting. How about "What Not to Do"?
Also, how about "A Day In the Life of a Real Estate Agent" - to demonstrate some of the unpredictable, unusual challenges we sometimes encounter (that are not covered in Principles and Practices) and how to face them with grace!

When I was active, I had a competitive edge selling HUD and VA properties because most of the agents were not familiar with the process at that time. A class on selling foreclosures would still be a good idea. Each state has a process for trustee sales.

You have some great suggestions Tammy Lankford, I agree with Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker. Whether be a new or a seasoned agent, all Realtors want to know how to generate leads.
I wish there was a class on communication but I don't think it would be helpful at all. Those who lack communications skills would have to change the way they are, a class wouldn't help(IMHO).

I've never seen one, but a class on effective communication and how it plays into an ethical sales process would be one I'd love to see. Lack of communication, poor communication, and confusing communication are major industry challenges.

Hmm, I am not sure. This question is always asked on the survey after the class but I never have any suggestions. I like learning about something new, so my only suggestion is that the topic be something new or different in the industry.

I am grateful to have so many resources in my area - in person and online - so I can't think of a topic that I haven't seen. Also, being with EXP, we have a phenomenal amount of training on a weekly basis, so even if it's not CE, I can access the information.
A few that I have really liked recently are:
- Best practices in representing buyers on new homes
- Buying a home with a 401k
- Commercial real estate classes. While I don't aspire to be a commercial agent, the more we know, the better referral agents we can be to a trusted commercial agent... and those are often very nice referral fees! My first one was $2,500 just for referring a chiropractor friend who was looking for a new office to lease. That got me hooked on getting more referrals to my go to commercial agent.

Teaching agents how to run a business would be a good one. I realize it doesn't directly impact their clients but so many agents don't know how to run a business. They often don't realize what they're getting themselves into.
