The only referral fees I have ever paid or received have been to other agents. There are some service providers who offer a referral fee and I don't use any of them since they charge the customer more to offset that fee and that is not right. There are probably local agents who accept referral fees from providers but I'm not aware of any.

Hi Peter Mohylsky. BRIX REALTY I've never received a referral from any vendor.  That's not the way to earn my business.  If they do a good job, keep their word and offer a fair price that will get my repeat business.

Now I have given and received referrals from other agents.

Very common for real estate professional to professional.

While we cannot give referral fees to painters, lawyers, etc., I certainly will thank them and probably include a coffee card or something of that nature.  If they regularly send me deals, I'm going to send them a very nice Christmas gift and probably take them and their spouse out to dinner or two during the year.  This is just common sense to show a sign of respect and appreciation.  Business 201 type stuff here.

I once had a contractor tell me I would be paid 10% of the job.  I did not ask for a referral fee nor did I expect one.

Was he was hoping he would get the job if he paid a referral fee?

I was less than happy.  I told him right to his face. Or should I say, I let him have it!  Charging my client more to pay me 10%!  Why would I do that when I am already getting paid by the seller.

Referral fees for real estate are very common.

I would be fired by my wife broker if I ever tried to take a referral fee from a vendor.  We don't even take them from home warranty companies who offer them.  NOPE, not happening.  Broker to broker and it's all in writing and we're good to go.

I tell vendors, I'd rather have your referrals than your $100.00 referral gift.

Plus, I don't like vendors that lead with that offer, why do they need to?

* If you have a fiduciary, you may want to get legal counsel on whether or not you can accept such a fee.  IDK, but it might be worth an email to FAR Legal, or ask your favorite lawyer next time you see him or her.

The only referral fee the I've been involved with is a referral for one Realtor to another and the fee varies by transaction, agent and circumstances.  I proudly state to all of my clients that I will never accept any money for any recommendation I make and that the only reason I refer someone is that they are as honest as I am.  Any fee accepted should be disclosed.

I reward good behavior.
My good behavior is rewarded.

I will forego the FEE for preferential treatment when I call at some time in the future.
The home inspector I use does not pay a referral fee, but when I need a cursory 'pre-inspection,' we have an agreement.
Such 'referral compensation' expectations, I would suggest, are present 85% of the time.

I don't ever expect a vendor to pay me a referral.  If I know a good service provider, I'm going to recommend them.  I would like to think that they'll reciprocate, but if they don't, it's fine.

Referral fees are common here in Real Estate. I'm not sure about outside of the business. I know we are so short on trades people and the ones we do have can't keep up with the work they have, so I'm pretty darn sure no one is paying referral fees in those areas. But you know what they say about assuming! lol I haven't ever received a referral fee from any of the businesses that I have referred.
