“We want to provide more environmentally-friendly options for cities to choose from when selecting their street lights,” says Merlin MacNaughton, FortisAlberta’s Stakeholder Relations Manager. “We are piloting a few options in various cities to help us determine which ones provide the most energy reduction and best level of lighting.”Media are invited to attend as four light fixtures become greener.       A Power Line Technician replaced the four fixtures at the top of the streetlights in Waterstone Crescent.    Mayor Linda Bruce is pleased the pilot program is heading to Airdrie. “The City of Airdrie is proud to partner with FortisAlberta to help ...

Airdrie Regional Air Show went BOOM SWOOSH as the Snow Birds opened the show , from a spectators point of view it was awesome. The Airdrie Regional Air Show Society reported they regret that there were issues with traffic and apologize for any inconvenience. They pre-sold only 5000 tickets, so they were overwhelmed with the last-minute gate admissions. Regardless, the show was a great success and the benefactors, STARS Air Ambulance and the Airdrie Cadets are grateful for the financial support they have received through the air show.  The great turn out shows there is a high demand for an air show in the area, so if there is another event in 2011, we will certainly be planning for ways to alleviate the traffic congestion.  The show was wrapped up by the filght and stunts of a CF-18 Jet...

The City of Airdrie, just north of Calgary, is experiencing unprecedented growth with near doubling of real-estate prices. City Council, staff and citizens are increasingly interested in sustainable growth and development which has led the City to work with The Natural Step in creating a municipal sustainability plan, as part of its Sustainable Communities Program. Airdrie will be using the Alberta Urban Municipal Association (AUMA) Municipal Sustainability Planning Guidebook which is based on The Natural Step Framework. The Natural Step will continue to provide training and coaching to the City of Airdrie as their municipal sustainability plan is developed. Airdrie has committed to engaging its citizens, participating in peer to peer networks and sharing the outcomes of their process....

Wow! what a Kick off, the first day of the annual AIRDRIE Home and Garden Fair held at the Twin Arenas in Airdrie Alberta was a Rip Roaring success.  Everything was kicked off by a Stampede style Chuck Wagon Breakfast in the company of Royalty.  The Calgary Stampede Queen and 2 Princesses, were present at the Breakfast, along with City, Provincial and Federal government dignitaries.      These were the Best Flap Jacks this writer has experienced at one of these outdoor breakfasts and by the size of my belt you can tell I've been to more than a few.  ALI-OOP was there in good form , he's the mascot from The Scoop Newspaper, along with Al and Lois Jones the Proprietors of The Scoop, you should really advertise with these folks if you can they are wonderful business people to deal with.  ...

The Airdrie Hunting and Fishing Association was formed last February by Wes David and aims to get Airdrie’s youth and families involved in more outdoor sporting activities. The  main goal is to get kids and families involved. It’s not just about going out and hunting. It’s about all outdoor sports from fishing right down to gopher hunting. The association met for the third time on April 21 and implemented a new program called Garbage for Gophers. Airdrie has grown enough now and there are enough young people to get involved in the outdoors rather than Xbox and GameCube and stuff. It’s a good way to get them out.  One common stereotype a hunting and fishing association gets is that it’s an old-boys club, usually dominated in numbers by men, but that’s something this association wants t...

MY QUESTION - has anyone received a benefit from doing a trade show?  Every year our office participates in a local Trade Show.  Many an agent has commented that they have received no benefit from doing a trade show.   Great Expectations?  New Leads?  Or just getting exposure to the public shows that you're out there.  I personally enjoy the annual Trade Show - I get my face out there.  SO has anyone out there have any suggestions to boost moral and enthusiasm for the hours spent at a Trade Show? After a longer, snowier and colder then usual winter the spring is finally here in good old Airdrie and Calgary. Winters in Alberta are always too long but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. With our usually stable ecomomy, government, and standard of living...not to mention the great people I have yet to find all these pluses in another location...even though I may not be looking too hard to find them elswhere. With spring we are now into a much improved real estate market. Prices are steady and sales are up with listings keeping up at a good rate. Still a good time to buy and many people seem to agree and are finally taking the plunge back into the market. On the economy...it appears Alberta should ride out this storm better then some areas and be one of the first places to recove...

Airdrie RCMP members are warning residents to trust their instincts and err on the side of caution in relation to a recent fraud scheme. On April 3, the RCMP was notified about a recent scam occurring in the community in which a senior was conned out of a significant amount of money. The senior received a call at her home from a male claiming to be the employee of a local financial institution. He made inquiries about which local bank he senior used, recent transactions and he suggested there may have been a computer error that compromised her account. He stated he would make some inquiries about the account and call her back. When he called her back, he said it was possible a teller had taken money from the account with the intention of replacing it. He said the account was now closed ...

An Airdrie high school student was lucky to avoid injury after he claims his Apple iPhone internally combusted and began smoking, hissing and expanded in his hand before he threw it to the ground. The student said he  was texting on the phone when it suddenly got hot and began expanding, it started to smoke a bit and then combusted inside . He said he threw the phone to the ground where it burnt the floor and melted a nearby electrical cord, resulting in the school being evacuated and the Airdrie fire department called in. His mother, has filed a complaint with the Canadian Safety Board because she fears the product could end up hurting someone else. Calls to the Apple media relations line seeking comment were not immediately returned.  A technician at Apple’s telephone help center sai...

Airdrie Skate Board Park to Break Ground This Spring It has been a long, arduous process in the eyes of the Airdrie skateboarding community, but the long-awaited skateboard park at Chinook Winds will break ground this spring and is expected to be completed by fall. The conceptual plans for the park were unveiled Wednesday night at city hall by New Line Skateparks Inc who have handled the design aspects. Skateboarding enthusiast and co-owner of Sully Boardsports, Jon Salomons, is excited to see the park so close to becoming reality.    Chinook Winds Park is 65 acres of sport and recreation land that will add to the city’s plan of having one major recreation destination in each area of the city.  “When we did our parks master plan two or three years ago, we wanted various major park desti...

The market is still in the buyers court. Prices are slowly dropping and downward pressure is continuing due to the world wide recession and overall economic outlook. People need to find confidence before things will turn around.First time buyers should give good thought to getting their first property as rates are at an all time low and there are many homes to choose from. Some lenders still offer the Zero Down as an option so if you have stability in your continued earning potential or job security then now is a good time to buy.If your considering moving up this is also a good time as the higher priced properties have dropped the most dollar-wise.Don't hesitate to call for your free market anaysis or information about buying or selling today

With yet another Snowfall Warning issued today it seems to important to post this warning for parents and children, from the Airdrie Public Works Department  many of the large snow banks created by snowplows and graders are removed throughout the city.   “Snow banks around the city are an attraction to kids, but can present many dangers to the children that play in them, especially where the snowplow and grader operators are doing their work,” said Lorne Stevens, public works and engineering manager for the City of Airdrie. One close call was avoided by city workers’ due diligence.  “We came across one instance recently when our guys went in to to remove the snow. They were doing a workplace assessment and they found some kids who had tunneled into a snow bank,” Stevens said. “I’m not ...

City of Airdrie Amnesty Program Quickly Defeated A one-time program proposed by city staff to forego penalty fees for unpermitted home renovation work was quickly shot down at city council Monday night. The proposed bylaw, dubbed the Amnesty Program for Un-Permitted Work, would have opened up a three month window starting in April for homeowners to retroactively receive permits for work that has already been completed and not inspected.  The fee for projects completed without a permit is currently double the permit fee for that specific project. A property search fee of $25 would have also been waived. City of Airdrie staff cited the safety benefit for both those inside the home, as well as neighbours as the reasons for the proposal. The idea was originally brought forth during a meet...
