Katherine Haas | Opelika-Auburn News Barking is allowed, leashes aren’t required and running fast is encouraged. The City of Auburn has plans to establish a leash-free zone for four-legged friends to roam in the form of a new dog park located in Town Creek Park on South Gay Street. The dog park, which will be the second in the city behind the existing one at Kiesel Park, will be fully accessible and in compliance with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines. Alison Boykins Frazier, Auburn’s public works representative for the project, said the idea for the dog park at Town Creek came following a request from a disabled resident. “In September, the city received a request by a disabled resident for access to the dog park (at Kiesel),” Frazier said. “While temporary accommodation...

Diana Olick | @diana_olick   A sharp drop in interest rates, combined with new reduced costs for the market's most popular mortgage products, sent mortgage applications soaring last week. Total volume increased 49.1 percent from the previous week on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to a weekly survey by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) for the week ending January 9, 2015. The jump was fueled by a seasonally adjusted 66 percent increase in applications to refinance, which are now at the highest level since July 2013. Applications for interest-rate-sensitive jumbo refinances more than quadrupled from the previous week. Applications for a loan to purchase a home rose a seasonally adjusted 24 percent from the previous week and are now two percent higher than they were a year ago...

Increased hiring and a boost in consumer confidence are expected to lift the housing market this year. Mel Evans AP Six years ago, homebuilders and Realtors were facing brutal business conditions: millions of Americans were losing their jobs and homes. As 2015 begins, hiring is strong and economic indicators are pointing up. Could this be the year when the housing market finally breaks out of its tepid recovery and takes off? Economists see several reasons why 2015 might be a banner year for homebuying — and not just in San Francisco and Miami. They also see One Big Fa...

DECEMBER 2014 | BY BARBARA BALLINGER   This time of the year, we hear from just about every sector of the economy what’s expected to be popular in the coming year. Sara Falligant | Opelika-Auburn News | Twitter Auburn University students looking for a quicker way around campus won’t have to look far starting this summer. By mid-2015, the university will boast a free bike share program for students, thanks to Charleston, South Carolina, based Gotcha Ride. “You’ve seen them in big cities like New York and London,” Parking Services Manager Don Andrae said, explaining the free bike share program will be similar to paid ones in large cities. The 75 blue, three-gear bikes will be situated in corrals in high-traffic areas like campus dorms, Tiger Transit hubs and the Haley Center concourse. Students can borrow a bike for 24 hours without a fee. “We don’t care (where students take the bikes), as long as they brought it back to where they got it from in 24...

Sara Falligant | Opelika-Auburn News | Twitter Auburn University launched its new collegiate car tag this month, which was designed based on input from Alabama Auburn graduates. The tag features the interlocking AU logo on the left—the original AU vanity tag featured Samford Hall, but was changed to the interlocking AU in 1992—a blue stripe at the bottom with “Auburn” in white and “Alabama” at the top in an orange stripe. Fans who purchase the tag can also personalize the available six characters for free. State law requires collegiate tag designs be changed every five years. “This past year, we did a survey of our in-state alumni,” explained Debbie Shaw, Ph.D., vice president of alumni affairs. “Our university communications office designed several choices. …We just decided to let our ...

The city landed a major golf tournament that will pump millions into the local economy. One of the city’s largest employers announced a major expansion. “We’ve been blessed,” Fuller said. “I consider us very fortunate.” Fuller recently discussed those successes, along with the opportunities and challenges facing Opelika, in 2015.
