I was so upset when the Coast Guard moved Sonya Unkrich's husband to Tennessee and she went with him! When you find someone who does a great job with your hair, you never want to lose them. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when Sonya contacted me to let me know she was moving back to Mobile. She opened a shop on Cottage Hill Road and my girls, my grandchildren and I have been loyal customers ever since. The Hair Saloon (yes we said Saloon) is a full service hair salon serving West Mobile since 2005.  Owner Sonya Unkrich, a Master Cosmetologist and native of Panama City Florida, has been doing hair since High School.  The wife of a career Coastie and her high school sweetheart, Sonya and Chuck have chosen to settle down in the Mobile area having served our country for more than 30 y...

It's amazing to me that someone could write an article on a subject they seem to know so little about and have it published nationally. There was an article in last week's Mobile Press Register giving tips to consumers who were interested in buying foreclosures, also known as REO (real estate owned) properties. It was not written by our local editor, so the information in this article was probably published in many papers.  One of the tips was to contact the REO listing agent directly because there would be only one agent to pay, inferring that the buyer would save money because the commission would be lower. Now, we list REO properties, so we could greatly benefit from that advice, however, it is very misleading. We do have sellers from, time to time, that want us to cut the commission...

I just learned about an idea that started on a blog in March called the 3/50 Project. The idea is the brainchild of a retail consultant, professional speaker and writer, Cinda Baxter. It's really very simple. Pick three local businesses that you would not like to see go out of business. Spend at least $50 each month at each business. Pass the idea along. That's all there is to it. What an easy way to help your local economy! I'll be eating at Dick Russell's BBQ tonight. It's a start. ------------------------------------------------------------------------   This Blog by: Julie Martin, CRB, e-PRO, Broker/Realtor, Port City Realty Mobile, AL; 877-880-8110 toll free; 251-665-4665 my cell; julie@portcityrealty.com.  For the past six months we've been optimistic (some would say naively) that Mobile would weather the current recession better than most communities. Last week Forbes confirmed that view, by naming Mobile one of the "Best Cities in America for Recession Recovery." This designation is not much comfort if you have been laid off or your company is facing difficulties, but if we continue to embrace a diversified economy (health care, education, shipbuilding and aerospace) the worst may be behind us. Meanwhile, major announcements continue to set a remarkable pace in Downtown Mobile. Birmingham hotel developer Mike Cowart, who finished the new Hampton Inn in record time, has announced his plans for the site of the American National Building at St. Joseph and St. Louis Streets. Once again in ...

They Should. Mobile, Alabama is once again on Forbes - "Best Cities" List. This time Mobile has been named one of The Best Cities For Recession Recovery. Read about all the cities here.  Mobile was also named this year in Forbes - Best Medium Cities for Jobs, and in 2008 in Forbes America's Fastest-Growing Large And Small Metros. Forbes is not the only one who has noticed our fair city. Money Magazine, Entrepreneurs and Best Cities are only a few that have all recognized Mobile in the past couple of years. We have new industries coming to our area that include the largest steel mill in North America, and a new speedway. The executives that are choosing Mobile are doing so because they like our location, our local government and our beautiful city. With our historic neighborhoods, our wa...

With today's Real Estate Market being a bit flat nation wide. Sellers and potential seller are still holding out on price. Not wanting to reduce the price on their properties thinking they will get the price "they want for a home. Not realizing a home will only sell for what the market will bare. In other words a home is only going to sell for what a buyer will pay for it. Seller have in their mind what they think their house is worth. They may have done upgrade and improvements and drop invested money into the property with the expectation of making that money back when they sell. This also can end up being a bad deal for the seller because the modifications to the home or upgrade may or may not be what a potential buyer deems worthy of a particular price.       If you've ever wondered what there might be to do in Downtown Mobile on a Friday afternoon. In the span of an hour in an area no larger than five blocks - In Bienville Square, artist Aaron Hunt painted a massive depiction of the Passion of Christ, hundreds of bikers rolled through the Bankhead Tunnel to raise money for the American Cancer Society and families enjoyed live music in Cathedral Square during Fridays @ 5. As this single hour in a Friday afternoon demonstrates Downtown Mobile is many things to many people...and we haven't even gotten into the events of one of our really action-packed weekends! With Arts Alive and Volunteer Mobile's Shrimp Cook Off bringing thousands of fans and supporters, April 17-19 is shaping up to be one of the best weekends to experience Downtown....
