Daniel Myron Lefever was born in Hopewell, New York back in 1835.  In the early 1850’s he began a gun making career as an apprentice in Canandaigua, New York.  He opened his own gun-shop in Canandaigua in 1857.  His principal business was making muzzle-loading rifles.  In 1862, he joined with James Ellis to form Lefever & Ellis, they built long-range rifles used in the American Civil War.  The partnership ended in 1867.He joined several partnerships between 1867 to 1880.  In 1902 he formed the D.M. Auguste-Savinien Leblond was born in France back in 1760.  He came from a family of mathematicians.  I don’t have any information on where he went to school or much of anything about his formal education.  What I can tell you about him of course is the rest of the story.  This one is going to be short so let’s get to it.He was a teacher of mathematics but he also published works that earned him the esteem of his peers. Archibald Alec Leach was born in Bristol, England back in 1904 to Elias and Elsie.  His father was an alcoholic and his mother suffered from clinical depression.  When he was 4 he was sent to the Bishop Road Primary School.  When he was 9 his father placed his mother in the Glenside Hospital which was a mental institution.He was 31, when he discovered his mother was still living.  In 1915, he won a scholarship to attend the Fairfield Grammar School.  While he did not excel in academic subjects he excelled in sports.  Where his did find enjoyment was working backstage in Bristol theaters.  In 1918, when he was 14 he was expelled from school.  He became a part of the vaudeville circuit and began touring.  One of those tours was in the United States and he decided to stay in the US not ret...

Sergel Vasilievich Lebedev was born in Lublin, Congress Poland back in 1874.  He went to school in Warsaw.  In 1900, he graduated from St. Petersburg University.  After graduation he worked at the Petersburg Margarine Factory.Starting in 1902, he moved from university to university in Russia, starting the Saint-Petersburg Institute for Railroad Engineering.  In 1915, he was appointed Professor at the Women’s Pedagogical Institute in St. Petersburg.  By 1916, he was a Professor of the Saint Petersburg Academy for Military Medicine.   By 1925, he was the leader of the Oil Laboratory at St. Petersburg University.  He died in 1934, he was 59.What you may not know about Sergel is that he was a chemist and the inventor of polybutadiene synthetic rubber, the first commercially viable and mass-...

Robert John Lechmere Guppy was born in San Fernando, Trinidad back in 1836 to Robert and Amelia.  He was raised by his grandparents, Richard Parkinson and Lucy.  His grandfather wanted him to take over the castle, a role in which he had no interest.  He came into an inheritance from other relatives.He left England at 18 and visited Australia, Tasmania before being shipwrecked on the coast of New Zealand in 1856 for two years.  Later he became Trinidad’s Chief Inspector of Schools until his retirement in 1891. Nicolas Leblanc was born in Ivoy-le-Pré, France back in 1742.  His father died in 1751, he was sent to Bourges to live with Dr. Bien, a close family friend.  Dr. Bien died in 1759.  Shortly after his death Nicolas enrolled in the College of Surgeons in Paris to study medicine.  He graduated with a master’s degree in surgery.  After graduation he opened a medical practice.  In 1780, he accepted a position as the private physician to the household of Louis Philip II, Duke of Orleans.  In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a prize for a substance that could be produced from salt.  By 1791, he had succeeded, the prize was awarded to Nicolas.  In a plant he was able to produce 320 tons of the product.Now, I’m sure you want to know what he discovered, well he discovered how to manuf...

Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., was born in Chicago, Illinois back in 1935.  He attended Haines Elementary School, graduating when he was sixteen in the top 10% from Englewood High School in 1952.  He continued his education graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Bradley University.  While at Bradley he distinguished himself as Cadet Commander in the Air Force ROTC program receiving a commission of second lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve Program.  At the age of 21 he was designated as a U.S. Air Force pilot upon completing flight training at Malden Air Force Base, Missouri.  In 1965, he earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Ohio State University. John Hundale Lawrence was born in Canton, South Dakota to Carl and Gunda back in 1904.  I wrote about his brother Ernest the other day.  He graduated from the Canton High School, before enrolling at the University of South Dakota.  He continued his education getting his M.D. degree from the Harvard Medical School.He had a long-term association with the University of California, Berkeley working at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  He discovered treatments for leukemia and polycythemia by injecting mice with radioactive phosphorus derived from the cyclotron invented by his brother.  His main field was working with cancer patients. Thelma Adele Patten Law was born in Huntsville, Texas back in 1900 to Mason and Pauline.  She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1917 as valedictorian.  In 1923, she graduated from Howard University with a medical degree.  The following year she earned her medical license.  She set up her first practice in Houston at the Odd Fellows Temple in 1924.  In 1940, she became the president of the Lone Star Medical Association.  She died in 1968, she was 67.What you may not know about Thelma is that she was the first African American woman admitted to the Harris County Medical Society.Your day is worthwhile when you make someone smile, so give the free gift of a smile today.

Norma Deloris Egstrom was born in Jamestown, North Dakota back in 1920 to Marvin and Selma.  Her mother died when she was four and her father remarried.  She graduated from Wimbledon High School in 1937.  While in high school she was the female singer for a six-piece college dance band.She sang professionally over the KOVC radio in Valley City, North Dakota in 1936.  At the age of 17 she left ho and traveled to Hollywood, California.  She found work on Balboa Island, Newport Beach as a short order cook and waitress at Harry’s Cafe.  In 1938, he fainted onstage due to overwork and an inadequate diet. Paul Christian Lauterbur was born in Sidney, Ohio back in 1929.  She graduated from Sidney High School.  While a teenager, he built his own laboratory in the basement of his parents’ house.
