Peter Fintan was born in Laois, Ireland back in 1827 to Patrick and Ann. He attended Carlow College training as a civil engineer later at Trinity College, Dublin.He moved to Australia arriving in Victoria in 1852. You could find him mining in the Ovens Valley for a little while before moving to Eureka Lead. In 1854, a miner was murdered, a committee was formed to investigate the murder. Peter was a member of that committee.In that same year he led the miners’ opposition against the often-brutal administration of the authorities.
