Mary Elliott was born in Carter County, Kentucky back in 1867 to Benjamin and Nancy. She completed her schooling at the University of Charleston and the University of Kentucky. After graduation, she taught school.He met and married Harvey in 1893. The family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan and then to Pikeville, Kentucky in 1896. Harvey was an attorney representing Norther Coal and Coke. After their move to Pikeville she began her career as a writer. From 1906 until 1926 she worked as a journalist for the Ashland Daily Independent. She was a member of the Kentucky Equal Right Association working to improve the lives of women through reform of suffrage, marriage and divorce laws.
