Philp Livingston was born in Albany, New your back in 1716 to Philip and Catherine. He graduated from Yale College in 1737. He returned to Albany to serve a mercantile apprenticeship with his father. He moved to New York City pursuing a career in the import business trading with the British sugar islands in the West Indies.He was a promoter of the founding of Kings College and helped organize the New York Public Library in 1754. He founded the first Chamber of Commerce in 1770. He served as a member of the provincial House of Representatives from 1763-69 and in 1768 served as Speaker. After the adoption of the New York State Constitution, he was appointed to the New York State Senate for the southern district in 1777.
