Franz Lieber was born in Berlin, Prussia back in 1789/1800, the exact DOB is unknown.  He joined the Prussian Army in 1815, wounded during the Battle of Waterloo.  After the war, he returned to Berlin entering the University of Berlin.  Moving to Jean he enrolled at the University of Jena in 1820.  Just four months later he finished writing a dissertation in the field of mathematics.  He fought briefly in the Greek War of Independence.  In 1827, he moved to Boston, where he worked as a gymnasium administrator.  While in Boston he edited an Encyclopedia Americana between 1829-1833.  He became a professor of history and political economics at South Carolina College serving 20 years.  From 1856-1865 he held the position of Professor of history and political science at Columbia University. ...

Elizabeth Van Lew was born in Richmond, Virginia back in 1818 to John and Eliza.  She was sent to a Quaker school in Philadelphia.  Her father was a slave owner and when he died Elizabeth and her mother freed them.  During the depression of 1837-44 she used her entire inheritance to purchase and free some of their former slaves’ relatives.When the American Civil War started she and her mother started taking care of wounded soldiers.  Not only did she care for the Confederate deserters she also cared for the Union soldiers. Edwin Hughes was born Wrexham, Wales back in 1830 to William and Mary.  He worked as a shoemaker until 1852, when he joined the 13th Light Dragoons of the British Army.  In 1854, he sailed from Portsmouth to the Crimea.  After arriving he saw battle at Balaciava, Inkerman and Sevastopol.He rose through the ranks to retire after 21 years of service as a troop sergeant major.  He was awarded the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.  At the time of his retirement he was 42.  He died in 1927, he was 96.What you may not know about Edwin is that he was the last surviving member of the Charge of The Light Brigade during the Crimean War of 1854-56.Your day is worthwhile when you make someone smile, so give the free gift of a smile today

Emily Elizabeth Holman was born somewhere in Pennsylvania back in 1854.  I could not find any information about her childhood, schooling and so on.  What I can tell you is the rest of the story, so let’s get to it.  She married David (date unknown) the union produced no children. She worked as a clerk in an architectural firm, before deciding to embark in her own firm.  In 1893, she opened E.E.
