John Macintyre was worn in Glasgow, Scotland back in 1857.  His father was a tailor and his mother was related to the missionary and explorer David Livingston.  He was trained as an electrician before enrolling at the University of Glasgow in 1878.  He changed his field for medicine and graduated in 1882 with a Bachelor of Medicine degree.He worked as a naval surgeon in London, Paris and Vienna.  He returned to Glasgow with the position of Surgeon for Diseases of the Throat at Anderson’s College Dispensary.  In1897, he moved to London and founded the Rontgen Society of London, serving as their first President.  He died in 1928, he was 71.What you may not know about Dr. Macintyre is that he set up the world’s first radiology department at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Glasgow in 1895.  ...

Martin Lutoslawski was born in Drozdowo, Lomza Governorate, Congress Poland back in 1871 to Franciszek and Paulina.  After completing his studies abroad, he founded a factory called Gratif (Graphite) where he produced fire-resistant safes.  He later became a lecturer at the Warsaw Polytechnic Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.  He was an avid community leader working for the Association of Engineers.  He built the first reinforced concrete House in Warsaw, also using reinforced concrete in the construction of the Church of Christ the Savior in current-day Lithuania. John Kirk was born in Barry Angus, Scotland back in 1832.  While I could not find out about his childhood he earned his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh.  From 1858-1864 he was on an expedition as a botanist.  The Kirk Range that lies west of the Shire River forming a part of the Malawi-Mozambique border is named after him.In 1865, he helped on the abolition of the slave trade.  In 1873, he was appointed British Consul in Zanzibar.  In 1890, he was the British Minister Plenipotentiary at the 1890 Slave Act Conference in Brussels.  He photographed many scenes and people during his travels in East Africa.  He was also a botanist, throughout his life publishing many papers from his finding in East Africa.  He introduced a very distinct and pretty species of orchid to the Uni...

Elizabeth Audrey Killick was born in London, England to George and Winifred.  She attended Streatham and Clapham High School.  During the Blitz of WWII, she moved to Cheshire.  She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force working as a radar mechanic.  After her demobilization in 1947, she worked at the Royal Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine as a laboratory assistant.She attended the University of St. Andrews earning a degree in natural philosophy in 1951 and an honorary doctorate in 1998.  She joined the Admiralty Underwater Weapons Establishment in 1969, working on radar systems used in Royal Navy warships, as well as the torpedoes used in submarines and aircraft.  Her work was highly classified and gave few interviews.  She died in 2019 from a heart attack, she was 94.What you m...

Robert William Kearns was born in Gary, Indiana back in 1927.  He served in the U.S. Army in intelligence related groups and too, manufacturing, being assigned to the Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of the CIA, during World War II.  He graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.He continued his education earning a master’s degree in engineering mechanics from Wayne State University and a doctorate from Case Institute of Technology.  Can you tell he is way beyond me?  What you may not know about Robert is that he also was an inventor.  He claimed his invention steamed from an incident on his wedding night in 1953, we won’t go there!!!  Yes, we will, it was an errant champagne cork that shot into his left eye, leaving him...

David Jacks was born in Crieff, Pertshire, Scotland back in 1822 to William and Janet.  In 1841, he migrated to American landing in Long Island.  He worked with his brothers as an army contractor in Brooklyn.  In 1849, he moved to California, there he worked at the city’s Custom House.In 1850, he moved to Monterey, by 1852, he was elected Treasure of Monterey County.  After his election, he began purchasing land in the area.  In 1859, he bought some 30,000 acres for the hefty sum of $1,002.50.  The cities of Monterey, Pacific Grove, Seaside and Del Ray Oaks and Pebble Beach are a few of the cities that are now on that land.  He owned a dairy along the Salinas River where he produced cheese.  He died in 1909, he was 86.What you may not know about David is that the cheese he produced was ...

Israel Beilin was born in the Russian Empire back in 1888 to Moses and Lena.  In 1893, the family arrived at Ellis Island.  The family settled in a three-room tenement on Cherry Street.  His father worked in a kosher meant market.  He quit school when he was eight, helping to support his family becoming a newspaper boy.Working the Bowery, he was exposed to the music and sounds coming from the saloons, at times he would sing some of the songs he had heard.  He joined with others who went to saloons on the Bowery and sang to customers. Abu Abdullah Muhammad al-Idrisi al-Qurtubi al-Hasani as-Sabti was born in Ceuta, North Africa back in 1100.  The family spent much of their life travelling through North Africa.  The only schooling I could find was when he was 16 he studied in Cordoba.  He also visited parts of Europe including Portugal, France and Hungary.He joined Abu al-Salt in Sicily, with his vast knowledge, he drew some maps from his memory of the many places he had visited.  He told Abu al-Salt about the Chinese junks carrying leather, swords, iron and silk.  He was one of the first Arabs to write about the Silla Dynasty of Korea.  The Tabula Rogeriana was drawn by him for the Norman King Roger II of Sicily.  In his time, they were the best rendition of the current world known to anyone.  He died in 1160.What you...

Frederick Erastus Humphreys was born in Summit, New Jersey back in 1883 to Jay and Fannie.  He attended the Pennsylvania Military College, where he won an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.  At West Point he learned fencing and graduated 8th in his class in 1906. After graduation, he was assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers in Fort Riley, Kansas.  He was later deployed to Cuba during the Pacification Expedition.  Afterwards, he attended the Engineer Officer Basic Course.  In 1910, he resigned to work in this father’s business, where he served as an officer in the company.  The last 12 years he served as president of the company.  He died in 1941, he was 57.What you may not know about Frederick is that the Wright Brothers trained him to fly in a heavier-t...

Hannah Haberfeld was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia back in 1924.  During WWII, she was imprisoned at the Ravensbruck and Malchow concentration camps.  Most of her family was killed during the Holocaust.  In 1950, she moved to Israel.  For a brief time, she taught in the Basis Yaakov school system.Later that same year she began working as a night editor for the newspaper Yediot HaYom.  In 1951, she was hired as a correspondent for the newspaper Omer.  She continued to work her way up the ranks, retiring in 1990. James E. Fulton Jr., was born in Ottumwa, Iowa back in 1940. As a child, the family moved to California. He earned his bachelor’s and medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans where he excelled as a swimmer. In 1969, James along with Dr. Kligman and Dr. Plewig released their study, The Effect of Chocolate on Acne Vulgaris. The study revealed that chocolate did not contribute to acne.James and his wife Sara started the Vivant Skin Care business in 1990 in California. The company moved to South Florida in 2000. John Baptiste Ford was born in a log cabin in Danville, Kentucky back in 1811 to Jonathan and Margaret. In 1813, his father left of fight the British forces at New Orleans never to return. At 12 he was apprenticed to a saddlemaker, he ran away at 14 settling in Greenville, Indiana where he remained for the next 30 years.In 1854, he moved to Albany, New York where he produced steamboats many of which were used by the Union forces. In 1864, he turned his attention to glass making and opened up the New Albany Glass Works producing bottle and jars. Erie Sauder was born In Archbold, Ohio back in 1904 to Daniel and Anne. He attended school only to stop in the eighth grade. He was a cabinet maker by trade however, he worked for the Archbold Ladder Company. In 1934, he opened his own business and of course that is the rest of the story.He started out making kitchen cabinets and other wood products upon request. An order came in from a local chicken hatchery that needed a specialized stick to insert between incubator cages. The order was enough to feed their family at five dollars per week. Louis Nanasi was born in Los Angeles, California back in 1956. By the age of 9 he was working his craft, at 14 he was replaced by a younger person. In 1979, he graduated from the University of California, San Diego.   He had various jobs until 2006 where you would find him managing real estate in Van Nuys, California.In 2013, he was arrested in Sn Diego while re-entering the United States on four felony counts of making a threat to cause death or great bodily injury and one felony count of stalking. He was sentenced to one year in jail, afterwards he was sent to a residential drug treatment center. William Wadsworth was born in Pueblo, Colorado back in 1881. As a young man, he worked as a messenger, callboy, telegrapher and signal operator. Later you could find him working as a trick bicycle rider and a salesman.In 1907, he opened one of the first movie theaters in Ogden, Utah. He charged five-cents a show and two-years later the price had doubled to ten-cents per show, changing the movies twice a week. With all his new-found wealth, he soon expanded to Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and San Francisco.While doodling one day he came up with a logo when he founded his new company, that logo is still in use today. Alfred Civilion was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut back in 1869. His father was a practicing dentist and the first “dental commissioner” for the City of Bridgeport. Of course, Alfred followed in his father’s footsteps graduating from the New York College of Dentistry in 1890.He had an idea which he started in 1906. He continued to gather support and in 1913 he established a school after raising funds of $46,000.00. His first class was held in his garage. Edith Hinkley was born in Rockford, Illinois back in 1891 to Arthur and Harriet.  In 1912 she graduated from Whitman College with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics.  In 1914 she earned her master’s degree at the University of California.In 1916 she married Shirley Leon and moved to New York City taking a job at the Memorial hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases as assistant physicist to Giocchion Failla.  She started research in the treatment for cancer on in other medical research applications.
