Edouard-Gaston Deville was born in La Charite, France back in 1849. He attended the naval school, served in the French navy, conducting hydrographic surveys in the South Sea Islands and Peru. He moved to Canada in 1874. He started working as a surveyor and astronomer in Quebec, Canada in 1875 advancing to earning the rare designation of Dominion Topographic Surveyor by 1880. He was the Surveyor General of Canada from 1885 until his death in 1924. Under his direction roughly some 52,000 square miles of Canada were surveyed. Samuel Cleland Davidson was born in County Down, Ireland back in 1846. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. At 15 he left to work at a Belfast civil engineering firm ran by William Hastings. In 1864, he left his job to work for his father who operated a flour mill. Later on, his father and uncle ran a business importing tea. Samuel was invited to take a trip to India to see how tea was manufactured.With his background in agricultural and engineering knowledge he began to develop an improvement to significantly improve crop yields. He invented and developed a means to mass produce the tea crops. Returning to Ireland in 1874, he began to manufacture his patented tea machinery, as they say the rest is history. William Conan Davis was born in Waycross, Georgia back in 1926 to Kince and Laura. He would spend his summers with his maternal grandfather Jonnas a Sioux Indian at the Okefenokee Swamp. He graduated from Dasher High School in Valdosta, Georgia. He continued his education at Talladega College in Alabama. He was drafted to serve in the Korean War commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. After being discharged he received his Master of Science degree in organic chemistry from Tuskegee in 1958. Being an African-American back then the University of Idaho was the only university to accept him as a research-track graduate. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1965. Bernard Eugene Custis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania back in 1928. He graduated from John Bartram High School in 1947. He continued his studies at Syracuse University from 1948 to 1950 playing football setting numerous records that would last for decades. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 1951 NFL draft.The Browns offered him a chance to play safety, when he refused he was released moving to Canada he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He started in 1951 ending his career in 1956. After his professional career ending he stayed in Canada as a teacher and elementary school principal. Jerome Lester Horwitz was born in Brooklyn, New York back in 1903. While in school he was a mediocre student but excelled in sports, especially in basketball. He dropped out in high school working odd jobs. He was an accomplished ballroom dancer and singer where he performed at the Triangle Ballroom in Brooklyn.While cleaning his gun at 12 he accidently shot himself in the leg which made it noticeably smaller than the other one. He started performing with his two brothers in vaudeville acts. As they say the rest is history. He became the most famous of the act, which is two brothers encouraged him to continue. William Cruickshank was born in Scotland. Sorry I looked but could not find out where, or when but what I can tell you of course is the rest of the story. He graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1780. In 1788, he was the assistant to Adair Crawford at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.In 1802, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. By 1803, he was ill, probably due to the exposure of his experiments. Michael J. Cullen was born in Newark, New Jersey back in 1884 to Irish immigrants. He worked for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company in 1902 for 17 years. In 1919, he worked for Kroger Stores until 1930. He quit moving his family to Long Island to launch his own store, and that is the rest of the story, so let’s get to it.He leased a vacant garage in Queens in 1930 he opened the doors to King Kullen Grocery Company. The store carried a variety of items, automotive accessories, hardware and of course groceries. His success was rapid, the chain expanded even surviving the Great Depression. Cornelis Jacobszoon was born in Alkmaar, Netherlands back in 1572. He attended a Latin school until around 1587 when he attended the Academy in Haarlem. He was a skilled engraver on copperplate but also was interested in alchemy. In 1595, he married Sophia, that union produced 6 children.In 1604, the family moved to England. He invented the magic lantern, the predecessor to the slide projector. He also invented the first glass-grinding machine for the manufacture of optical instruments and compound microscopes with two convex lenses. Needless to say, he was in demand but he wasn’t finished. George Constantinescu was born in Craiova, Romania back in 1881. His father was a professor of mathematics and engineering at Sorbonne University. Charles Albert was born in Fairfield, Maine back in 1844 to Albert and Anstrus. When he was 18 he moved to Lynn, Massachusetts to work for his uncle Charles at his shoe company. He spent 20 years there, establishing his own shoe factory. In 1833, he was approached by another Lynn businessman to help with a struggling electric company from New Britain, Connecticut.
