Sowell's Furniture is celebrating their 85th year of business in Searcy AR.  I visited it today and came away SO impressed.  The furniture is lovely and the art work is especially lovely and the cookie was delicious.  But the things that were so interesting were historic items as I show a little of here. Their location is 207 W Arch in downtown Searcy.  First and second pictures show the antique elevator.....still in use!  Absolutely amazing and unchanged!Third picture is upstairs and shows the antique flooring! You can go upstairs and see the ceiling decor that is still there! All the furniture is fantastic......so different from the furniture that I bought 50 years or so ago!  I wish I had more time to show some but I need to quickly urge you to go and visit!!  You will be glad you did.

You may want to go visit! The Barkin' Barn is located near downtown Searcy AR on Gum Street and is open on Friday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.  They would like to have longer hours but need more volunteer workers. When I entered the store, I was stunned to see so many fine items for sale at very low prices.  Many families are having to scale down and are donating lovely and beloved items to charitable organizations.  Barkin' Barn is operated by the Humane Society .  Someone called me and said they had even seen a 1968 painting done by Barbara S. Duncan!  It must have been called Bell Book and Candle.Plan a visit.  You will be amazed!

Ebay card for sale.  East Race Street, Searcy ARThis card has shown up and says it was East Race Street in Searcy AR around 1928.  Perhaps some of the Searcy Sleuths will know the exact location.  Here is my guess.  This house at 402 East Race is on the market for sale right now and one of the pictures is shown here.Compare the lines of this home at 402 E Race and see if you think it is probably the current view of the one in the picture on the postcard. It was built, according to court house information, somewhere around this 1920's date.  It is an interesting comparison and the postcard is a treasure.

What is this?  Yarnell Ice Cream dip can....now painted. Good memory!Yarnell's Ice Cream was a Searcy AR favorite.  The ice cream was delicious and the company was in business until a few years ago.  It sold and has recently sold again. This photo was supplied by our Searcy Sleuth Anita Hart Fuller who reported that a friend sent it to her.  The friend bought it at a sale and had it painted to be more attractive and to hold flowers.  The dip can held ice cream in various ice cream parlors and the ice cream was dipped onto a dish or cone.  It must have been in a big container judging by its height.  Wonder what the 42 meant?  Yarnell's is now owned by Turkey Hill and their ice cream is wonderful....just as Yarnell's was.  In addition,Turkey Hill has something that I really like outside. ...

How about Christmas in July? These two little folks are singing their hearts out.  Picture them singing a Christmas song in the window of the Van-Atkins store on North Spring Street in Searcy AR.  That was their job for many years.  They were plugged in to electricity, had movements and recorded songs to sing.  When kids went by they had to love these guys. When the store was closed they went to the home of the VanHooks (owners of the Van-Atkins store) and were tucked away until the recent VanHook estate sale.  Looking at them again, they seem to be pleading.....no one bought them at the sale because no one knew who they were.  That hurt!I meant to have this blog up before the sale and I am not sure that they can still be sold (check with V Smith Estate Sales) but their story needs to be...

Yarnell's Ice Cream....Turkey Hill Ice CreamWe have read that our hometown ice cream factory is going to start making Turkey Hill All Natural Ice Cream.  We are not sure when or how or wheather Yarnell's will have a new name.We are just sure that as the old saying goes, "Till the cows come home," applies here and we will definitely love Yarnell's till the cows come home.  AND!!  LOOK!!  Has a giant cow arrived to stay?  Or is she just passing through?"  She has been parked at Yarnell's for several days so I snapped a picture.  I am in love with her already so I hope she stays!

Fence  vs. Tree?Chain link fences are wonderful because they don't have to be painted, don't rot, don't have termites and seem to last forever.  But this one seems to have found a formidable foe.  I found this site at a listing today and thought it very interesting because of the time it has had to take to get to this stage. The tree was probably pretty big when the fence was put in because no one would plan a problem like this.  So the tree kept growing, the fence stayed solid.......until......this situation.  It's a tough battle but I think I am betting on the tree's winning.  If I live that long!
