Billie Kenneth Koe was born In Astoria, Oregon back in 1925 to Benjamin and Monta. Later the family moved to Portland’s Chinatown district. He attended Lincoln High School, where he won a full scholarship to Reed College. he majored in chemistry. While attending college he helped his family by washing dishes at Hung Far Low.After graduation, he continued his education earning a master’s degree from the University of Washington and a doctorate from the California Institute of Technology. He joined Pfizer’s Brooklyn laboratory in 1955, where he worked on developing antibiotics. He started working on a chemical compound Pfizer had been working on but had discarded it.
