George William Manby was born in Denver, Norfolk, England back in 1765 to Matthew and Mary.  He was educated at the Free Grammar School in King’s Lynn.  He volunteered to fight in the American War of Independence at 17.  He was rejected due to his youth, instead he was sent to the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich.  In 1788, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Cambridgeshire Militia reaching the rank of captain before resigning in 1793.  He married the daughter of Reverend Preston but left her in 1801 after being shot by her lover moving to Clifton, Bristol.  In 1807, he witnessed a Royal Navy ship carrying French prisoners run aground killing 214 people including women and children.  With that embedded in his mind he invented a mortar call the Manby Mortar.  It fired a thin rop... 09/22/2021

John Macintyre was worn in Glasgow, Scotland back in 1857.  His father was a tailor and his mother was related to the missionary and explorer David Livingston.  He was trained as an electrician before enrolling at the University of Glasgow in 1878.  He changed his field for medicine and graduated in 1882 with a Bachelor of Medicine degree.He worked as a naval surgeon in London, Paris and Vienna.  He returned to Glasgow with the position of Surgeon for Diseases of the Throat at Anderson’s College Dispensary.  In1897, he moved to London and founded the Rontgen Society of London, serving as their first President.  He died in 1928, he was 71.What you may not know about Dr. Macintyre is that he set up the world’s first radiology department at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Glasgow in 1895.  ... 09/02/2021

Milt Machlin was born in New York City, New York back in 1924.  After just one year of college he enlisted in the United States Army serving in the Asia Pacific Theatre.  After the war, he attended Brown University, continuing his education he earned a second from the Sorbonne in Paris.After graduation, he worked as a journalist for the Agence France Press, then as an editor for the adventure magazine Argosy.  In 1969, he traveled to the jungles of Papua New Guinea.  His mission was to learn the fate of Michael Rockefeller, son of the New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller.  He never found Michael but he was sure that Michael had been killed by a local tribe. Martin Lutoslawski was born in Drozdowo, Lomza Governorate, Congress Poland back in 1871 to Franciszek and Paulina.  After completing his studies abroad, he founded a factory called Gratif (Graphite) where he produced fire-resistant safes.  He later became a lecturer at the Warsaw Polytechnic Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.  He was an avid community leader working for the Association of Engineers.  He built the first reinforced concrete House in Warsaw, also using reinforced concrete in the construction of the Church of Christ the Savior in current-day Lithuania. Peter Lowe was born in Scotland circa 1550.  Around 1565 he left to study medicine completing his studies in Paris, France and by 1589 was a surgeon to the Spanish Regiment in the service of Phillip II of Spain at the siege of Paris.  In the early 1590’s he travelled to England with Alexander Dickson.While there he surveyed several harbors, sending details back to James VI in Scotland.  On his return to France he was appointed surgeon to Henry IV of France.  He settled in Glasgow around 1598 where he set up his medical practice in the west of the country.  He petitioned the King and was granted a Charter which enabled the foundation of a medical incorporation for physicians and surgeons.  The college later expanded to include dentists, making it the only institution in the British Isles... 07/30/2021

Hannah Lincoln Harkness was born in Houghton, Michigan back in 1914.  She attended the Milton Academy in Massachusetts and Vassar in New York.  At 16 she obtained her pilot’s license.  At Vassar she earned extra money taking students for rides in an aircraft she rented from a nearby airport.In 1932, at the end of her freshman year she earned her commercial license receiving national attention.  In 1936, she married Robert an Air Corps Reserve Major.  In 1937-38 she worked as a test pilot for the Gwinn Air Car Company.  During her time at Gwinn she tested the new tricycle landing gear, which subsequently became standard on most aircraft.  She died in1976, she was 62.What you may not know about “Nancy” Harkness Love is that during WWII she convinced William H. John Hundale Lawrence was born in Canton, South Dakota to Carl and Gunda back in 1904.  I wrote about his brother Ernest the other day.  He graduated from the Canton High School, before enrolling at the University of South Dakota.  He continued his education getting his M.D. degree from the Harvard Medical School.He had a long-term association with the University of California, Berkeley working at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  He discovered treatments for leukemia and polycythemia by injecting mice with radioactive phosphorus derived from the cyclotron invented by his brother.  His main field was working with cancer patients. Norma Deloris Egstrom was born in Jamestown, North Dakota back in 1920 to Marvin and Selma.  Her mother died when she was four and her father remarried.  She graduated from Wimbledon High School in 1937.  While in high school she was the female singer for a six-piece college dance band.She sang professionally over the KOVC radio in Valley City, North Dakota in 1936.  At the age of 17 she left ho and traveled to Hollywood, California.  She found work on Balboa Island, Newport Beach as a short order cook and waitress at Harry’s Cafe.  In 1938, he fainted onstage due to overwork and an inadequate diet. Gustaf de Laval was born in Orsa, Sweden back in 1845.  He enrolled at the Institute of Technology in Stockholm receiving a degree in mechanical engineering in 1866.  He continued his education at Uppsala University in 1867, receiving his doctorate in 1872.  In 1886, he was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.In 1882, he introduced his concept of an impulse steam turbine.  In 187, he built a small steam turbine to demonstrate that such devices could be constructed.  In 1890, he developed a nozzle to increase the steam jet to supersonic speed.  The nozzle, now known as a de Laval nozzle can run at up to 30,000 rpm. Tadeusz Wladyslaw Konopka was born in Litchfield County, Connecticut back in 1923 to Charles and Sophia.  He dropped out of high school to enlist in the United States Army in World War II, he was a member of A Company, 296th Combat Engineer Battalion.  He earned five battle stars while serving in the European Theatre.Postwar he studied acting in Hartford, Connecticut.  He became proficient with puppets and ventriloquism.  He spent most of 1950’s and 1960’s doing commercial voice-overs and playing minor television and movie roles.  He received six Emmy Award nominations for his performance by an actor in a supporting role in comedy.  He appeared in a few episodes of The Love Boat.  His final big-screen role was in the 1980 comedy Caddyshack.  He died in 1986 from colon cancer, he was 62.... 03/05/2021
