If all goes well, Kingman will be getting a Christmas present in December 2010.  Dave Zanetell, project manager for the Hoover Dam ByPass Project, has announced a target date of late fall 2010 to open the eagerly awaited bypass that will cut  an hour off the travel time between Kingman and Las Vegas.  Now that the support arch for the bridge (named MikeO'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial) is complete and will rise approximately 900 feet above the Colorado River.  It has taken almost 20 years from conception to the awaited completion. Kingman, Arizona is the ideal area for creating "green" or sustainable programs. In the last few months, probably the last few years, there has been a huge amount of development that wants to create solar farms, wind farms and biodiesel plants. This week has been an extremely active week trying to get approval for a biodiesel plant and also a solar farm in the Kingman area. These two entities have brought their presentations to the county planning and zoning commision for Mohave County on Wednesday of last week and also this Wednesday. There has been a small contingency in the area where these programs want to build their plants that say they want progress but "nimby" - not in their backyard. A Canadian Company, Rocher Deboule has manganese in its sights in Mohave County.  They have purchased Artillery Peak located 80-90 miles south of Kingman. A company spokesman cites that currently 95% of the manganese used to make U.S. Steel is imported from overseas, particularly from China.  China's own needs have reduced the amount of manganese available for export.  One of the few American reserves of this mineral is located at Artillery Peak.  Although mined before, the company believes there may be up to 150 million tons of 3-4% grade ore, making Artillery Peak the largest source of manganese in the U.S. The company hopes to have the mine up and running in 2 1/2 years with the hope of employing about 100 people.  They currently are in the process of permitting the site. Kingman is hosting it's annual Relay for Life Event on June 6-7th at White Hills Elementary. Cancer has taken my husband and father, and this year I intend to join in the event in honor of their lives and the life of my middle son, a childhood cancer survivor.  I'm participating not only for them, but for the caregivers that experience the heartbreak of the disease. There are many fundraising events that proceed the Relay.  Our team is sponsoring an event at the local I-Hop on Tuesday, May 26 where 25% of your dinner check will go to the cure.  We are also hosting a Rummage Sale on Saturday, May 30th at Realty Executives located at 2403 Stockton Hill Road. Mohave Sun Power, LLC has announced plans to build a 340-megawatt solar concentrating plant 27 miles north of Kingman.  Planned to be one of the largest projects of its type in the world, it will use the same parabolic trough technology with m olten salt storage as the Albiasa Plant previously announced. Along with the plant proposed for White Hills, this is the 4th project to plan relocation to Mohave County! Although there is some concern about water useage for these projects, I am seriously hoping for some give & take on the part of local residents considering the need to promote development and job creation in the county.

Kingman Regional Medical Center Foundation has just broken ground on the Joan and Diana Hospice Home.  After years of fundraising the much needed home is a reality.  Located at 812 Airway Avenue, the home will provide a place for those who are terminally ill and do not have a caregiver or live too far out of town for at home hospice service. Mohave County Planning and Zoning has another solar power plant on the horizon.  Smaller than the first, the Comission will consider a minor amendment to the County General Plan, the Yucca Area Plan and a rezoning request for Havasu Solar Electiric to construct the site.  The farm will sit on 17.7 acres of property east of Interstate 40 and north of Boriana Mine Road near Yucca. I have a small confession, I'm a city girl...born and raised back on the east coast....now living in Kingman Arizona. I've gotten accustomed to seeing cattle, quail, coyotes, and other critters right out my back door.  But today takes the cake.  A bear wandered down from Hualapai Mtn and showed up at our local post office.  Of all days, I left my camera sitting on my desk so I could not get a photo.  I'm sure you will all be able to view the incident and hear all the news at the Kingman Daily Miner Website. Mohave County makes Fox News this morning. It seems that environmentalists are opposing President Obama's renewable energy goals.  One of the projects mentioned is the solar energy plant scheduled to be built outside of Kingman.  Those concerned are opposing water usage, and particularly the effect on the Sonoran Desert Tortoise. We can have non-polluting energy projects and much needed jobs for people or we can protect the Tortoise. I hope clear heads go forward to make the right decision.

  Not only will a massive windfarm grace our borders, but the news is that Albiasa Corporation has chosen a 1,400 acre site near Kingman as the future location for a $1 Billion 200 megawatt conentrating solar power plant. Gov. Jan Brewer has stated "The arrival of Albiasa Corporation is yet another big step toward establishing Arizona as a leader in the sustainable industries sector..."  The project is expected to generate 2000 jobs during construction and more than 100 permanent jobs for the area. Kingman, Arizona broke ground this week on their new wastewater treatment facility. This facility increased the capacity of sewage treatment from 2+ million gallons to 5+ million gallons of effluent. There is availabilty of increasing the capacity to allow for golf courses, etc. to purchase the reclaimed water for  irrigation purposes. Looks like development of new homes just received a boost in the arm. The Contractor says that they will be looking at local subs to do the work, which starts on Monday, 5/4/09 so the Kingman economy also will get a boost. We are getting a distillery.  That's right, we are excited.  It will be located in the Airport Industrial Park. John and Deborah Patt, the new owners have purchased a German-manufactured still similar to the one used in Flastaff by High Spirits Distiller, who manufacture prickley-pear cactus vodka. The company should open within the next 6 months.

Have you ever wondered just how long a particular building component like siding, may last on a new home If you live in Kingman Arizona, the most common material is stucco which has a normal 50+ year life if installed correctly.  Remember all stucco cracks with typical settling and exposure in our climate.  If a crack is less than 1/8 inch wide it shouldn't cause much concern.  However, if a crack is more than 1/8 inch or has a defection there is a possibility of structural movement and should be addressed asap.
