This photo was taken by Gary Woodburn of Victoria. I thought it was so similar to one of Monet's waterlillies paintings that I had to put it onto my Blog for everyone to see. Photo Courtesy Gary Woodburn

Come out and watch the convoy of classic cars and European models in Victoria today (Sunday August 24th) for a good cause. The European and classic car picnic raises money for the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children. The funds go to build a sensory regulation room for young patients at Ledger House, a children's mental health hospital. Starting at Clover Point at 8:30 a.m., the cars will make their way to Queen Alexandra, 2400 Arbutus Rd., by 10 a.m. As well as the car show, there will be magic shows, face painting, tattoos, a silent auction, crafts and a barbecue.

One of Victoria’s most popular annual summer events, the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival is a wonderful combination of culture and sport. Our world-renowned inner harbour is the venue for this festival, and it is believed to be the only Dragon Boat festival in North America to take place in a working harbour. The Dragon Boat Festival - "Duan Wu Jie" in Chinese - is traditionally celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Most believe dragon boat festivals were established to commemorate a great patriot poet, Qu Yuan. Dragon boat racing is not only one of the most important Chinese traditions second to Chinese New Year, but now is an annual event held in over 40 countries. A unique aspect of the dragon boat is that people of all ages can paddle and compet...

After kicking it around for about a year, Victoria Council has done it. Victoria has voted to add 10 buildings to its ’heritage registry’. There were already nearly 900 properties on that list, and so one might wonder - what makes this recent addition noteworthy? It’s noteworthy because it marks the first time buildings erected after 1930 have made the list. All 10 buildings are of fairly recent vintage, built between 1945 and 1975. They were chosen as samples of ’post war modernism’ and worthy of protection. In case you don’t know what distinguishes post war modernistic architecture, check these photos. As you go through them, see if you can identify the features or characteristics that bring them into the category of ‘post war modernism’. Bay Street Hydro Substation at 631 Bay Street,...

It all started in 1670!   That’s when the Hudson’s Bay Company (later, ‘The Bay’) was founded in Canada. It was an imperialistic fur trading company with a serious competitive edge - the King of England gave it all of the land that drained into the Hudson Bay - that was more than half of the entire land mass of what later became Canada. Within a century and a half, the Hudson’s Bay Company’s control extended to virtually all of Canada, from Atlantic to Pacific to Arctic. But the Hudson’s Bay Company’s extensive ownership and control was problematic to Canada when it gained nationhood in 1867. Maybe it was due to the fact that by then the fur trade was in serious decline, but in any event, a deal was worked out between the old company and the new country. The Hudson’s Bay Company’s surr...

In his July 2, 2008 report on the real estate market, the President of the Victoria Real Estate Board, Tony Joe, comments on this month's real estate statistics, saying that modest decline in sales from May to June have followed a pattern similar to that of last year. The overall average price of single family homes in the Greater Victoria area in June was $580,104, with the six month average being $600,740. These figures are compared to the six month average in January, which was just over $586,00. Thus, Joe says, "we see that prices have remained remarkably stable this year." There are clearly more properties for sale now, but strong interest is still being shown when homes are realistically priced.

VREBMatrix. is our New MLS system for Victoria Realtors. We officially had a soft launch last Thursday (July 3/06) Several of us monitored and assisted our MLS computer staff with possible Glitches and to ensure a smooth start for the 1400 + members of the Victoria Real Estate Board. One of our biggest challenges was converting our Client Search databases into the new Matrix system, and it has gone over well. I already have many Buyers commenting on the New Automated Listing search program, especially the new Aerial Mapping feature from Microsoft Virtual Earth called Bird's Eye View. On the Map Button, not only can Buyers clients look at a map location, but also four aerial views of the subject listing and the surrounding neighborhood. My Buyer and Seller Clients are very excited about t...

I was wanting build my strength up again, since over the years I had lost muscle mass and the Strength to lift many things around my home.   I recently came across this photo on Benjamin Madison's Blog, Victoria Daily Photo. Take a look at his Blog with some really outstanding pictures: http://victoriadailyphoto.blogspot.com/ I've always liked this house, ever since my parents took me to see it as a young child. What a great piece of real estate! It is known as the Swallowed Anchor, and is located across the road from Westbay Marina. The tiny house has an eccentric conglomeration of naval creations ranging from Peg Leg the Pirate and the Stork's nest on the roof, down to the lawn which has a large statue of King Neptune and a Mermaid, as well as the Porpoises. The house belonged to a mariner, long since gone, and obviously he retired there, hence the name. This home is actually lived in and is not part of the usual Victori...
