Claremont (Berkeley, CA)

Those of us who enjoy working, and don't mind working hard -- and I have plenty of company in this -- sometimes forget to take time off to spend with those we love. My daughter and I have said for about 3 years, "Oh, wouldn't it be great to go to a spa for a few days and relax, exercise, and enjoy time together?"Susan took the bull by the horns, found a Groupon for us to use at the historic Claremont Hotel on the border of nearby Berkeley and Oakland, just a mile from the University of California, Berkeley. This past Monday, I hopped on BART and went across the bay; she drove the hour from San Jose (no traffic on a holiday!) We met at the hotel and enjoyed two days laughing and chatting together, taking yoga classes, enjoying the fitness center and hikes, and treating ourselves to a coup...

See what homes are for sale now in BerkeleySee what homes are for sale now in Oakland   Anyone passing down Berkeley’s Tunnel Road has probably noticed the unique wall in front of the home at 135 Tunnel Road in Berkeley.  Featured in Sunset Magazine, this wall was built by the owner Adele Proom as a way to separate the house from Tunnel Road.  What makes it unusual is not the traditional ivy covering by an ivy espalier in a diamond pattern.  Proom evidently got the idea from a home she had seen in Tuscany. The wall not only separated this Berkeley-Claremont home from Tunnel Road, it made a unique entrance to a very special house.  This, the F.H. Hammer house built in 1909, makes its own statement in the Claremont tradition … with grand proportions and great detail. Surrounded by gardens...

See what homes are for sale now in BerkeleySee what homes are for sale now in Oakland The area once known as “Harwood’s Land” has always been a prime area in Berkeley.  About a mile from UC, it lies at the mouth of a lush, wooded canyon that leads up into the hills that cross into Contra Costa County. About the same time, the 1906 earthquake shook the whole Bay Area.  And with that, Berkeley ...

The recent news from the National Association of REALTORS® sounded a pessimistic note amid our struggling real estate recovery.  Pending home sales in the U.S. fell 4.6% last month from August levels.  Of course, Berkeley being Berkeley, we are not following national traditions – even in real estate.  In fact, in the last quarter (ended September 30), half of all sales in Berkeley had multiple offers and sold over asking! Secondly, in representing a Buyer recently who was trying to buy a house in Elmwood/Claremont, I was in a bidding war with eight others.  The house ultimately sold $150,000 above asking.  While prices are not back to the high times of 2007, it does portend increasing sale prices in the Elmwood/Claremont neighborhood of Berkeley.  In fact, upon further examination, pric...
