A Little Rain For Luck?  Two of our friends got married yesterday, it was a wonderful ceremony. The couple chose to keep it low key and have it a a naturally beautiful setting. The wedding was outdoors down by the river in Coloma.Although we are in a drought in California, and it is June, the clouds got dark as the wedding approached. We did get some rain while there but I heard something repeated by many. "It's good luck to have rain on your wedding day!” Sounds like a great day for the bride and groom!

Got a Little Rain Today in El Dorado County     It wasn't much that is certain but in a county that is experiencing a drought, any rain is a good start. As we enter the rainy season everyone is hoping that we get a good rainfall over the next several months. Today we had some sprinkles, sunshine off and on, and lower temperatures.

A Nice Quiet Time at the Belltower     A walk in the park in Coloma led to a church and belltower. It was very quiet while walking in the area, very calm and tranquil. The old tower and building led me to think how things must have been a hundred years ago before the local tourist.

Monument in Marshall Park     If you get a chance to visit Marshall Park in the Coloma, CA – be sure to get over to the monument. John W. Marshall is credited for being the first to find gold in Coloma, this led to the Gold Rush and changed California forever.   Though he did find gold, he was not much of a business man, and walked away to get a regular job working for someone else.

We stumbled upon this old church up in the foothills yesterday. It is about 100 years old and looking through the windows we could see the cozy little service. I loved the woodwork and hand build details; details that you don’t see today. One day we will get to see the inside tour.

There Has Been Mountain Lion Sighting in the Foothills of the Sierras     This is not anything new, the lions tend to come to the lower elevations when the weather gets hot and dry. It is there natural habit we should expect to see them on occasion. They are dangerous animals and we must be aware of our surroundings.

Hitting the Hiking Trails in Coloma         It was a last minute idea this morning, but my wife and I thought hiking might be a good way to get out for some exercise on a Saturday morning. By the time we got on the trail it was about 10:00 and the temps already in the 80's. It was a fun little hike in Coloma starting on the North Beach area. When we finish and were heading back to the car, we walked over the bridge and watched the people floating and paddling down the river. It looks much cooler than the hike; maybe that is the way to go the next time we are in Coloma.

Gold Panning at the Marshall Gold Discovery Site   You know, that place where James W Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill in California?   That one singular event that set up the greatest mass movement of people in the Western Hemisphere and helped (or even created) the explosive growth of the region for years to come…    So have you ever thought of panning for gold?  Come on, you know you have…  Well to get started you should head over to where the panning sign is and sign up!  Or, if you want, go visit the museum, and pay for panning there.  Then walk over to the area where you can do some panning with your receipt.  They do it between 10 -3 pm. It is a 45 minute lesson, and cost $7 per person.   You should to reserve your time slot, as on busy days you may not be able to sque...

Quiet Morning Down on the River   I had a chance to go down to the River near Coloma this morning. A few short months ago the water was flowing rapidly, but now things have slowed to a slow calm pace. It was great to take a little time on this Labor Day!

Rich in history and a fun place to visit with nature – Coloma, CA   There is a landmark in Coloma at the Sutter’s Mill Site that is right on the river. It is a rather large wall with the official marking stating that it is an historical landmark. Apparently John Sutter and his crew discovered gold in this area, the history of the gold discovery and the subsequence “rush” to California is well documented. If you are ever in the Coloma, CA area you will likely drive right through the state park. Take a few minutes and see the landmark, blacksmith, shops, and other assorted Gold Rush sites to see here. While I was walking toward the Sutter’s Mill Landmark, I noticed that the water is still moving rapidly from the hills. I thought I’d take a closer look just to say I did. As I approached,...

As the weather has gotten warmer the snow pack is melting and the water flowing down the hill has picked up noticeably. This and the recent rains have made for rapid, cold water traveling down the American River and into Folsom Lake. This photo was taken from a walking path in the town of Coloma near Highway 49.
