A Visit to the Cordiano Winery in Escondido CA – Views Galore   We attended a friend’s birthday party at the Cordiano Winery in Escondido last weekend, our first visit.   It was a typical June gloom day along the coast and we were hopeful we’d be blessed with the sun and warmer temperatures so far inland.   We were not disappointed. But we had no idea of what to expect for this winery and it was indeed a surprise.     The family-owned and run Cordiano Winery sits high in the hills of the San Pasqual Valley 5 miles east of the 15 freeway with spectacular views in most directions, a truly wonderful spot for a gathering with friends to enjoy their specialty – wood fired pizzas.   See that guy over there? He's taking pictures of us! A couple of days ago I went to see Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park. These two ring-tailed lemurs were out sitting on the ground soaking up the sun. As I raised my camera to take a picture, one leaned over to the other and seemed to whisper something. Orfila Vineyards and Winery is in Escondido, CA nestled in the picturesque San Pasqual Valley.  Just 30 minutes north of downtown San Diego, the winery produces Rhone-style wines from local grapes grown on its 70-acre estate near the San Diego Wild Animal Park.  The winery also acquires wines from other popular grape regions throughout California. Orfila Winery produces several varietal wines including a chardonnay, riesling, and viognier.  I particularly enjoyed the reds which include a sangiovese, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, and zinfandel varietals.  Other interesting selections included NV blends or "cuvees" both in select white and red wines.   Since it's opening in 1994, Orfila Vineyards has received more than 1,300 medals in major and international competitions.  The winer... 02/02/2011
