  California Sales Tax has Increased Effective January 1, 2013    The statewide sales tax and use tax rate increased one quarter of 1 percent (0.25 percent) from 7.25 percent to 7.50 percent on Jan. 1. This rate increase was approved by California voters when they approved Proposition 30 on Nov. 6, 2012.   Make a Wish and Blow-The Dandelion; Weed or Herb?   I grew up thinking the Dandelion feathery stem was just a weed and if you blew off the white feathers, your wish would come true. Yesterday, while doing my daily nature walk, I came upon a field of dandelions    Later while researching, I surprisingly found this plant grows on all continents is seen as a herb and not just a pesky weed.   Uses of the Plant:   ·       The plants are used to make diuretics to remove excessive body fluid swelling.   ·       The yellow flower called a “floret” is used to make herbs supposedly capable of relieving symptoms of gall bladder and liver problems.   ·       The plants are used in salads, sandwiches, wines, and root beer. Pelican Rescue from Arizona to Sea World in San Diego In the late spring 8 brown pelicans were rescued in Arizona; 4 in Tuscon and 4 in Phoenix. The pelicans were taken to local wildlife habitat shelters and they were given nourishment and stabilized. The birds were then flown on a large passenger airplane to San Diego, CA where Sea World took them to their rescue center. The birds were in poor health, had severe burns on their webbed feet and were covered in lice. With a lot of TLC, the Sea World avian experts were able to return them to the wild recently at Mission Bay in San Diego. In 2012, 151 brown pelicans have been rescued to date and taken to the center at Sea World. All but 17 have been released. Last year 175 pelicans were rescued and returned to the wild.
