According to recent FBI statistics released on Monday June 4th, 2007, the City of Irvine was once again named the safest city in America, compared to other cities that had a population of 100,000 or more.  Irvine has held that title now for three straight years in a row.  According to the study, Irvine had a 6% reduction in total crimes in 2006 compared to 2005, as well as a 17% decrease in violent crimes.   As you can see, I'm very proud of my city... safety is definitely one of the reasons why I live here, along with the variety of cultures, business opportunities, educational opportunities, and of course, fantastic real estate! For your information, four other cities in California made the Top 10 list of safest cities in the nation:  Sunnyvale came in at #5, Thousand Oaks came in at ...

Haven't we all been touched by cancer, somewhere in our lives? Relay for Life is organized by the American Cancer Society, which helps raises funds for cancer research.  The next Relay for Life is located in Irvine at Irvine Valley College, by Irvine Center Dr and Jeffrey.  Please come help the cause either by being at the event, or by donating money.  This will be a fun walk!  The Keller Williams Elite Realty Family is coming together with a booth plus four venues: snow cones, a popcorn machine, a "pirate" wheel of prizes, and a hole-in-one event.  KW will be rallying at 4pm for a Realtor's walk, and there are several different walks going on all day and night long.  The full schedule is viewable at this website, with a luminary ceremony starting at 9pm.  We will be remembering all tho...

Hey Irvine person!  I did not know this until my dear hubby went through the process of getting those free light bulbs the city was offering.  Surprise, surprise, there wasn't a long line to get them!  What was a surprise for me is that those compact fluorescent light bulbs that last soooo long contain a small amount of mercury.  Mercury is very dangerous when it touches your skin or if you eat it.  So, proper disposal of these kind of light bulbs (so we don't have mercury added to our landfills) is to take them to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility (yes, it's the same place where you drop off all your used batteries, electronics, used motor oil from your car and unused househould chemicals).  If the bulb is broken, please use gloves to clean up the broken pieces and bring both the ...

Irvine has a program called CERT -- Community Emergency Response Team which I just joined three weeks ago.  In the case of a major disaster or emergency to hit the city, the first responders (police people, firemen and women, doctors, EMTs, etc.) would be overwhelmed, especially with all of the growth Irvine has faced over the past ten years.  With the trained folks all up in arms, who's left to deal with everything else?  That would be CERT. CERT is composed of volunteers, who either live or work in Irvine (those of you in other cities can check out your city's emergency management group to see if something similar exists).  CERT is sponsored by the Irvine Police Association and the Orange County Fire Authority.  These classes have been occuring since 2000, and I am part of class #15. ...

I'm not sure where this acronym came to be, but "No Darn Foolin' Around" stands for the dates when your property taxes are due!  For the second half of the fiscal year, property taxes are due in February and delinquent after April 10th (which was yesterday).  In Orange County, a 10% penalty is added on after 5pm.  I'm hoping you got around to turning it in earlier, because obviously I am late in reminding you!  And 10% can be a big chunk of money around here. No = NovemberDarn = DecemberFoolin' = FebruaryAround = AprilImportant Dates to remember (according to the Orange County Government Online page):July 1  -- Start of fiscal year.November 1 -- First installment of property taxes due.December 10 -- Last day to pay first installment of property taxes before penalties are added.February 1...

Orange County, CA may be in trouble. The OC is home to the subprime lenders of America. The subprime mortgage market is collapsing like a bluff on a beach in a tsunami. Bubble bloggers dance on the graves of the fallen.  What I find amusing is that nobody feels bad for a collapsed lender.  I mean, come on, everyone knows that it's just a bunch of rich people playing with the Wall Street's money, right? Now Main Street's whitewashed windows and vacant stores Seems like there ain't nobody wants to come down here no more They're closing down the textile mill across the railroad tracks Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they ain't coming back to your hometown Your hometown Your hometown Your hometownLyrics from My Hometown by Bruce Springsteen Well, let me tell you a story of the re...
