A Visit to the Julian Pie Factory in Julian CA       On a recent day trip to Julian California, a former Gold Rush town about 50 miles inland, we stopped in to buy a pie at the famed Julian Pie Factory after enjoying lunch at our fave place, the Julian Grille.         Julian has been a popular apple destination for years, with their well-known Julian Apple Days Festival in the fall, and the Julian Pie Factory is a must-stop if you like apple pie, although they offer many others as well. The apple peach crumb is probably my favorite.   While you can buy Julian Pies at many local stores in our area (watch, because they vary in price from place to place) where it may be more convenient than a pie run out to the mountains, the Julian Pie Factory offers great local color and people watching...

When I was using an older version of Word, I had the same problem too.  I would receive a .docx file (created in Microsoft 2007 or later version) and then when I tried to open it, I got an error message.  I would have to ask the sender to re-send as .doc files since I had Microsoft 2003. You can now convert DOCX to DOC and open them with your lower version of Microsoft Word or Microsoft Office. With your licensed Windows operating system, follow the steps below: To convert .DOCX documents to the .DOC file format is to download the free Microsoft Office Compatibility pack available here.  This works for Excel files (.xlsx to .xls and for PowerPoint documents (.pptx to .ppt) also. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en ...

We took part of the day on Friday (on one of the most beautiful afternoons we have seen in a while, with temps in the low 90s due to the Santa Ana winds) to visit Julian California, about 50+ miles from Carlsbad in the mountains just outside the Cleveland National Forest. Julian is an old gold rush mining town (there are still mines you can visit) and it retains much of the charm, the old homes and buildings, and the atmosphere of those times (there's even a couple of horse drawn buggies to enjoy). At the same time, however, it has also become quite the tourist attraction for folks from all over Southern California. At 5000 feet above sea level, Julian feels dramatically different from coastal Southern California, with lots of pine trees, and the town is known for its apples and the fam...

We spent part of the day yesterday in Julian, California, an old mining town in the mountains about 1/5 hours from Carlsbad. I am always on the lookout for what other real estate brokerages and agents are doing, and some signs, names, and ads just naturally catch my eye. I saw this from a distance, and being where we were my first thought it might be a bar or pool hall or something - you know, the old wild west mining thing? When I got close and saw the tag line I thought...ah, resale homes on the mountain, a real estate office. Sometimes I have a one track mind.   And of course I immediately thought of good friend Woo Hoo Sally Cheeseman in Hawaii because of the name. But it turns out Mustang Sally's is a consignment shop of sorts. I still thought it was a great name and it does sorta...

Dining out is a favorite activity of mine. And of the Julian restaurants The Julian Grille in Julian CA is the best, in my opinion. We take an annual trip (and sometimes more) to Julian CA to enjoy the town, the quaint shops, and of course the apples and apple pie for which Julian is famous. We always take time to have lunch at The Julian Grille in the heart of town on Main Street. Taking a trip to Julian is a fun thing to do for a day or overnight and a beautilful drive through the mountains from Carlsbad.  The Julian Grille is in a quaint old home and offers a number of individual dining rooms - the enclosed porch is the best, offering views of the street so you can take in Main Street while dining. There is a miniscule bar (room for 3-4) plus plenty of outdoor dining on the cover pat...

If you are up for learning more about the Southern California area and things to do on a beautiful fall day...read on. If not, well you know where the delete key is by now. Fall is here in Carlsbad, and despite what those of you in colder climes think, we DO have a change of seasons. It is NOT always sunny and 80 degrees in San Diego. Indeed, we are having dinner in front of the first fire of the season in the living room (yes, it's gas). READ MORE: Fall is in the Air in Carlsbad, California Yesterday was a spectacular day and time for our annual jaunt to Julian, California for fresh apples (if you know anything about New England, or live there, you know the passion we New Englanders have for everything apple in the fall and getting them from an orchard is part of life in New England in...

This image was shot in the mountain gold mining town of Julian, California in San Diego County-July, 2008. Julian is an Official California Historical Landmark, #412. A short-lived gold rush was sparked by the discovery of gold in 1869 by a former slave named A.E. "Fred" Coleman. In recent years Julian has become a quaint mountain resort. My Father, Wife, and myself were on a trip to the High Desert at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and stopped in this mountain town for some of the world famous apple pies. The Julian Pie Company on Main Street has an awesome hot caramel apple pie! You can eat there, buy a pie to take with you, or they will ship it to your home. This image was recorded on main street in front of a boutique dress shop. I recorded the image with a tripod mounted Canon EOS ...

Julian California is an old historic gold mining time about an hour east of San Diego. Gold was discovered here in the 1870’s. The town was founded after the civil war as veterans of the Southern Confederate headed west to seek their fortunes. Mike Julian and cousin Drew Bailey found the area to their liking and the town that sprung up was named for Mike Julian. A cattleman found some gold flecks in one of the creeks and it was the start of San Diego’s only Gold Rush. It didn’t last very long and the residents then numbering in the area of 600 stayed to work the land. As it turned out, the land proved rich for growing apples. With 4 seasons mostly because of the mountainous areas, the rich land meadow still produces these sweet tasting apples even today. The current full time population...

Julian, California, is known as apple country, and is famous for its apple pies (hence, the Julian Pie Company). And it's not far from Carlsbad, so it's a fun thing to do.As a former New Englander, finding out about Julian has been a treat. I spent many years outside Boston, which as any good New Englander knows, is famous for apples, as well as chowder, lobster and other goodies. Julian doesn't have lobster or chowder, or certainly isn't famous for them, but they ARE for apples here in Southern California. You can simply visit a number of fruit stands in the Carlsbad area and BUY apples. But the best experience, again my New Englandism emerges, is picking apples. And Julian is the place to go for the best and widest selection. Here are some choices but visit Pick Your Own for more inform...
