Today, we celebrate the birth and independence of the United States of America. While the United States is still fragile with the COVID-19 pandemic, let us not forget to appreciate all of the wonderful things that we do have. Recently, I saw an analogy that I thought was very fitting during the time we are in. The time of so much hatred with riots, the time of concern because of a pandemic and a time of uncertainty with so much unrest. It goes something like this " Democracy is like a Garden and we have to be responsible for it. We have to tend to its care and keep out the weeds." As we persevere in patriotism and celebrate with fireworks, flags waving, cute 4th of July t shirts and accessories, let us remember the true reason we are celebrating today. And, let us be safe in doing so. N...

In a new developing story I must bring to your attention that the Lake Arrowhead 4th of July Firework Spectacular has in fact been canceled. On Wednesday Gov. Newsom tightened corona-virus restrictions for most of California, as the COVID-19 positive cases surge with more deaths being reported. Ahead of the July 4th weekend the state of California is putting safety first. There are also 19 counties in California that were told to close their indoor operations. Among these are bars, wine tasting rooms, zoos, restaurants and movie theaters. This will last at least three weeks and will be re-evaluated. The list of counties are : Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Solano in the Bay Area, as well as Los Angelos County. The other remaining counties are Fresno, Glenn, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Merced, Or...

Ducks are plentiful here in Lake Arrowhead. While most people sit on park benches along the water and feed ducks things like bread and chips, these are not the best foods for ducks. There is no nutritional value when fed to ducks and are just as unhealthy to ducks as they are to humans. Bread, for example, can be digested by the ducks, but it can leave them feeling full longer and doesn't give them all of the important vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need. If that is all you have on hand, that's okay. It isn't dangerous to them, but small amounts are best.  Some great foods to feed the ducks while you are enjoying them are grapes ( cut in half so they don't choke), cracked corn, barley, oats, birdseed or other grains. Frozen peas and corn kernels are also really good (defrost firs...

4th of July fireworks are happening here in Lake Arrowhead. It is a great time to experiece Lake Arrowhead Living! While the fireworks will still be launched over Lake Arrowhead, the location has shifted to the east end of the lake between the Outlet Tower and Emerald Cay.   The county approved and allowed the firework show to continue by approving the revised plan for the ALA July 4th fireworks because of moving the location for primary viewing. By doing this the primary viewing will be from boats or properties at the East end of the lake where social distancing can be better controlled. While the fireworks will not be viewed like normal from Lake Arrowhead Village or Tavern Bay Beach Club area, at least the firework show can and will still continue.  The ALA Fireworks Spectacular will...

The peace lily is often used as a decorative ornamental plant in homes, but did you know the many benefits that the peace lily offers? This low maintenance plant can survive without sunlight in bright indoor light and it purifies indoor air from pollutants. According to the research of NASA, this indoor plant has the ability to eliminate 60 percent of pollutants found indoors like ammonia, formaldehyde, benzene, xylene and trichloroethylene from the atmosphere. It also adds moisture to the air for better overall breathing. It is also eliminates harmful radiations from televisions and computers.  As home decor their bright green leaves gives a beautiful appearance to corners of the homes, on tables or shelves. I love roses. I especially love these yellow roses that I planted in my yard. When the light captures them their deep, bright yellow turns to orange. The yellow rose represents friendship, joy and caring. The yellow rose is beautiful and reminds me of the sun conveying warmth, delight and affection. I think in the time we are in it's the perfect rose to have had bloom. A reminder that even though things look very different and are very different we can still enjoy the beauty of nature, friendship and continue to have joy in our lives. While many things are beginning to reopen here in Lake Arrowhead our new normal is going to seem very out of the ordinary. Many businesses have been closed for a long time. Some of the staff and owners have probably worried more than we think they have. No...

Memorial Day is a day for honoring the men and women who died while serving our country in the U.S. Military. Even though this year looks different than we are use to, let us not forget the true meaning of this day. While we are accustom to BBQ's, hanging out on the beach, a day off and a boat ride around the lake, this year we will have to find different things to do. And, along the way maybe we can start to make new traditions.   While many places are still operating on a limited basis, many are still closed. But, you can still enjoy some of your favorite eateries and shops with curbside and/or door side pick up. Not only is it a great way to support local and small business, it is also a great way to get out, even if for just a few minutes to see smiling friendly faces.  Coach is now...

It's been beautiful weather here along Lake Arrowhead with little to no precipitation and we are loving it. Spring has definitely sprung. While the weather has been nice, I've been outside completing some cool little DIY projects to spruce up the yard. My grands love colorful things, as do I, so it has been the perfect opportunity to get out the paintbrushes and paint or repaint some yard accents I've had hanging around. I had a lot of fun painting these cut logs and placing them down the drive. They are bright, colorful and fun and add a little something extra.  Our poor old door certainly needed a face lift. I was able to repaint it and freshen it up a bit. I love the red and it blends well against the blue of our house and all the other colorful things I have been painting lately.   ...

Things will slowly start to get back to normal. While many things are still closed and/or operating on a limited basis due to COVID-19, the San Bernardino National Forest has made an announcement in regards to opening several area campgrounds. Please be sure to educate yourself on the new rules and regulations so that we can continue to operate, socialize and get-away safely.  It is still important for all of us to remember that the virus is still out there. Our goal with closing facilities and recreations was to flatten the curve as to not overwhelm the hospitals. Social distancing, staying home when sick, frequent hand-washing, wearing of masks, and recommendations by the CDC should still be followed for your safety and the safety of others. I believe that we can enjoy ourselves while...

I know this year as we celebrate Mom's all across the world, it is different and difficult. Most of our favorite restaurants are not open and there is no where to pamper yourself. I just wanted you to know that through all of this, through these difficult times, you are still being thought of and appreciated.   You've been rockin' this. Whether you've been staying home with your children and schooling them or if you have been an essential worker trying to do both, you've been amazing. And, it just goes to show that not all hero's wear capes. So, Happy Mother's Day to all the amazing Mom's out there. The ones who selflessly give up need or a want for one of their own. The one who wakes in the middle of the night to a hungry baby after only getting an hour of sleep. To the Mom's who are b...

With kids doing distance learning more and more parents are finding it hard to focus. Some parents are working from home and trying to school their children. Some parents are left having to make hard decisions because their children are at home and they still have to work. No matter how we look at this it is hard and not the normal for many families. Many parents have never even thought of homeschooling their children before and yet here they are in full swing, homeschooling. For most states this is going to be the new normal for the remainder of the school year. While I have never personally faced this myself with any of my now grown children, I did speak with a friend who did homeschool her children for years and I thought I would share some of these tips with you.  The first thing a ...

We seem to take these normal everyday life staples for granted. We get so use to having them around and of course open it's hard not too. It just becomes a way of life. While we are probably always grateful for them, it is times like this when we realize just how grateful we are for those little places.  Across the nation many things are closed due to the pandemic. I am so grateful for some of the small and large restaurants that have either stayed open or are currently opening. Even one take out meal a week has seemed like a life saver. This shelter in place has made so many of us tired and you would think we would have all the time in the world to nap!   Today, I am thankful for both the big and the small things because they make such a difference in our life and our community here in...
