Wordless Wednesday: The Lady in the Green Dress  We spent several hours at Balboa Park on Saturday as part of our anniversary celebration. Some of that time was at a wonderful and intimate art musuem, the Timken Musuem (free admission) that features a collection of European masters, American 19th Century art, and Russian icons in 6 rooms.   Part of the reason for going was to see "Leela - Portrait of a Woman in a Green Dress,"a modernist installation by local artist Bhavna Mehta, inspired by the 1530 painting by Bartolomeo Veneto, "Portrait of a Lady in a Green Dress" also in the museum (see photo at bottom). This almost-lifesize "sculpture" is all paper, folded and cut. Truly amazing and beautifully colorful.

Smiling on a Saturday: Balboa Park Carousel  We spent several hours yesterday in wonderful Balboa Park in San Diego to celebrate our anniversary. We stumbled upon this 1910 carousel on our way to the rose garden and had to stop and watch, plus take a video and photos for the grandkids!  I understand the murals are all originals, and all but 2 of the animals (I think ALL the seats - the stationary ones and those that moved up and down according to my research) are original. It was great fun to see the riders - young kids with parents, older kids - all whirling around while the music played. It's been decades since I've ridden one of these...how about you?

Screen on the Green    I love watching old movies in theaters and out on the lawn. You rarely get to ejoy the classics with an audience and it enhances the experience! So, from the Audrey Hepburn classic How to Steal a Million to Woody Allen’s charming Midnight in Paris, watch the Hollywood Stars as you sit under the stars on the botanical lawn of historical Balboa Park, just left of the San Diego Museum of Art.  Pack a picnic basket, blanket and gather up the family and friends or make it a date night! Screen on the Green 2017 Schedule (per website).Thursdays in AugustFilms begin at Sundown (approximately 8:00 p.m.)FreeAugust 3 | Goya’s Ghosts, 2006, R, 1 hour 57 minutesAugust 10 | The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1945, not rated, 1 hour 50 minutesAugust 17 | How to Steal a Million, 1966, ...

Sweden International HouseBalboa Park San Diego  Balboa Park, a 1200-acre urban park in San Diego, is a real treasure, and we have enjoyed multiple visits to the gardens, museums (including the world famous San Diego Zoo), and the House of Pacific Relations Inernational Cottages.  These quaint cottages, 34 of them representing different countries, are great fun to visit. We were at the international food festival back in 2012 and checked a number of them out. Alas, the one for Sweden - my maternal side of my family - was closed that day.  Each cottage has historical information, exhibits, souvenirs you can buy, sometimes food, and hosts who are happy to share their knowledge of each country's culture, history and traditions.

San Diego Museum of Art Quilt Exhibit We spend a couple of hours this past Monday at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. Enjoying museums and art galleries is one of our favorite things to do, and this was no exception, plus we had not been there before.  The quilt exhibit from 2 collectors, almost 50 in all, was most impressive. These are ALL hand done, which is pretty incredible when you see up close how many tens of thousands of stitches there are, and thousands of small pieces of fabric. These quilts were all made between 1860 or so and the early 1900s. Truly works of art!

Art San Diego 2015 is November 5 – 8 in Balboa Park, San Diego The premiere contemporary art show, Art San Diego, will be held November 5th through the 8th in famed Balboa Park at the Activity Center. In its 7th year, Art San Diego is a collection of established and emerging artists and fine art galleries (e.g., Sergott Contemporary Art Alliance in Rancho Santa Fe, and Alexander Salazar Fine Art in San Diego),  around Southern California, including from the growing San Diego art scene, as well as elsewhere in the US and internationally.  Paintings, glass, sculpture, and photography are just some of the venues exhibited at Art San Diego. Art San Diego is a juried contemporary art show, which means a review process was necessary in order for artists’ works to be included, leading to a col...
