MARCH 5, 2011 SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO HISTORY & FAVORITE DINING AREA......   One of the more outstanding features of our beautiful San Juan Capistrano is the train depot. It was completed October 8, 1894 and was written that: "Old San Juan will soon blossom with the finest depot on the Santa Fe system. We invite the architectural appreciators to come view this unique building illustrated with arches, a dome 40 feet high with a mission bell, dainty ticket office and quaint old fashion fireplace that will capture the tenderfoot as he breathes the balmy sea air." The statement was by columnist Dr. Alexander Hamilton Rowan on April 14, 1894 in the Santa Ana Standard, a weekly paper.   The Capistrano Depot is home to Sarducci's, a long standing town favorite located at the South end below the ...

I'm sitting in the most beautiful real estate office in San Juan Capistrano and dare I say south Orange County. I have my red shirt on with my Christmas tie and I'm staring out the window at the Mission San Juan Capistrano. The Mission is all lit up and there's a line around the block getting ready to enter its grounds. On the other side of the building in the community park hundreds of residents have listened to Christmas music and watched the lighting of the 30 foot high Christmas tree. Then from around the corner the police, with lights a flashing, lead a marching band playing holiday music down the main street in front of our office. Adults with festive hats, groups of laughing teens, and children with scarfs and warm jackets follow. A young group of men in tuxedos with classical in...

Lucky me, I get to enjoy San Juan Capistrano history, horses and homes. As I sit in the office this afternoon I stare across Ortega Highway and look at the stucco walls, red tile roofs and the church bells of the Mission San Juan Capistrano. Being able to gaze at the this site on a daily basis is a wonderful privilege and a part of California history. The Serra Chapel built in 1777 at Mission San Juan Capistrano is the oldest building still in use in California. San Juan Capistrano is also Orange County's oldest city. Horses are never far from sight either. Whether parading in front of the office in a holiday parade, or at the adjacent downtown park behind our building complex, or trotting for exercise and enjoyment at the many equestrian centers...horses are truly a part of daily life ...

Did you ever taste" Criollo" grapes, they are also known as "Mission" grapes? Mission San Juan Capistrano as some of you are aware is only 45minutes drive from Los Angeles, CA.   I wrote previously a post about it. If you missed it, here is a link to it.  http://activerain.com/blogsview/1866811/have-you-ever-been-to-the-mission-san-juan-capistrano-   I love good wine and I was surprised to discover that California's first Vineyard was located on the Mission grounds. In 1779 the first vineyard was established by planting of the "Mission" or "Criollo" grape.  Then came the first winery in Alta California built in San Juan Capistrano in 1783. They were producing white and red wines (sweet & dry as well). They also made brandy and port wines. I am sure many of you thought that only Europe w...

Sun Dried Tomato Café in San Juan Capistrano is a great little restaurant. It is walking distance to the Mission in San Juan Capistrano.   As some of you know I went to the Mission the other day. Well before we took a stroll, we decided to have Lunch prior to it. It was such a great experience, that next time we will go for a day trip to Laguna Beach, we plan on having lunch at their Laguna Beach Restaurant. If you have never been you must go. The salad is out of this world according to Diane and everyone I talked to. They have the freshest ingredients and organic whenever possible according to the waitress.  I had their signature Creamed Sundried Tomato Soup with Gorgonzola Cheese.  I have been racking my brains out how to recreate this fantastic soup at home. So anyone who reads this ...

Have you ever been to the Mission San Juan Capistrano? If not this is a must see destination for lovers of California history.  There is so much to tell, I will need to do a few posts about this. So in the near future I will write a little about:  1. the history, 2. the earthquake, 3. the mission bells, 4. the return of the Swallows 5. And of course I would be remiss if I did not write about the Hollywood connection to the mission.  Just a teaser: The mission was founded on November 1, 1776, by Spanish Franciscan Order priests.  The founding priests were Father Fermin Lasuen, if you go to the Mission Father Presidente Junipero Serra will take top billing and the third lesser know Father Gregorio Amurrio  will be in the background. It is like in the movies there is the Main Star and then...
