Vallejo, CA and Sonoma State University have something in common as of September 27th 2010.  There is a now a joint venture between Solano Community College's Vallejo campus and Sonoma State University where by local students can pursue a bachelor degree without leaving town. Vallejo, CA is a hidden jewel for higher education.  In August 2010 I highlighted Vallejo CA's Best Kept College Secrets. This agreement came about because of Measure G Bonds campaign, that students taking classes in the Solano College satellite campus in Vallejo could continue their studies to obtain a liberal arts bachelor degree from Sonoma State University. My daughters currently attend Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park where the main campus is located.  They love Sonoma State.  Now more students can take...

I had blogged this past week about an event orchestrated by the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum as a fund raiser on Saturday Sept 11.  It was our own local version of the "Antiques Roadshow". My daughters helped me lug down a table and gently hold my favorite bowl.  Both antiques were from my father's home in London, Ohio.  Growing up he was a local who bought and sold antiques and other sundry items. When getting my dad's estate ready to sell, I found a table in the corner covered with other antique glassware and a green shawl.  It looked very frou-frou to me, but it was quite unique and I like unique.  When I spoke to the auctioneer about it he said he was not sure and we put a top bid of $500 on it.  IF it did not get that, I would haul it back to California.  Well it did not sel...

Every summer is marked by the passing of the Relay Weekend at the St Patrick-St Vincent High School in Valleo, CA this past August.  A benefit for the American Cancer Society these events are held in cities nationwide.  Whether I am visiting Ohio in the summer or here in California, there is a relay taking place at any one time. Coldwell Banker Solano Pacific has a team every year, camping the whole weekend, selling sno cones and popcorn and running a bean bag toss to raise money. I was so excited to hear the goal of $250,00 was exceeded and $281,508.45 was raised. Congratulations to all who helped, contributed, sent prayers, and walked the track.  It is a community team effort by all.

Once a month the public can visit the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve.  This Saturday, Sept 11th is the day for September!  Our September weather is usually mild and perfect for an outing before the chill of fall descends upon us. There will be an ice cream social at 2pm, just in time for an afternoon break.  The Preserve is open at 9am and ends at 7pm.  Starting at 930am a Sierra Club hiker-leader will take participants on a hike to the historic south shore.  The hike lasts about 2 hours so make sure you dress appropriately with good shoes for walking. Bring water so you do not get dehydrated. Mare Island is rich in history as it was a naval base for many years.  It is a beautiful getaway for a day adventure and picnic.  Gather your friends and family and make your way there.  ...

No this is not the PBS's Antique Roadshow one can watch on TV, but almost!!  Here is a chance for us to take our treasures and get it appraised for the nominal fee of $10 for the first item and $5 for each additional item.  It has to fit through the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum doors at 734 Marin in Vallejo, CA. This is a fund raiser for the museum so in addition to finding out if your special item is worth a fortune it helps the museum fund their day to day operating expenses.  The coordinators for this event have worked very hard to get competent appraisers for any treasure that may be brought in. Several years ago there was a lovely home for sale in North Vallejo.  Out the backyard was a panoramic view of some rock outcroppings and rugged hills/mountains.  The agent who had the home for sale said she had a bet with her seller as to what was the name of those hills/mountains. As my husband worked for the city of Vallejo for many years and knew everything, I called him.  His immediate answer was Sulphur Springs.  So the agent won her bet and advertised the home for sale with view of Sulphur Springs Mountains. People hike the area and in the early evening you can see someone hand gliding from the peaks.  Columbus Parkway winds around the bottom of Sulphur Springs and there is a park called Blue Rock Springs close by. SAOR Cleanup August 25th The Solano Association of Realtors performed a neighborhood cleanup right after the Weds morning meeting. The target was Springs Road in Vallejo Those who contributed were Realtors, Title reps, Home Warranty reps, Lenders as well as Web Solutions/ Marketing. Of course a heat wave hit the day before so even early morning was fairly warm (requiring a fresh shirt right afterwards). It was great to see the positive community responses during cleanup (at least two verbally saying Thank you) while we were cleaning up.
