Vista's downtown is really two downtown's. There's the original one that's east of Santa Fe Avenue, the city's major north-south thoroughfare and there's another to the west where Vista Village shopping center was built in 2003. They're next to each other and together considered "downtown Vista." yet significantly different. More than 94,000 people live in Vista, which was incorporated in 1963 and over the years many newer commercial areas have taken attention away from the city's original downtown. In 1994, The Wave Waterpark opened just west of downtown, with four 35 foot tall water slides and wave machine.
