The Worst Garden Pest You Can Have in CedaredgeWhen visitors come to Cedaredge they love watching the many, many deer that hang out around town. The deer are everywhere. They cross the streets and don't pay attention to the crosswalks. They expect you stop for them. I usually do because I'm a nice person that way. The deer taunt the dogs and make them bark. They make you do sudden stops on the highway which is in no one's best interest. They also eat your garden. If you want it to grow...you have to fence them out. I have an six foot tall fence all the way around my veggie garden. The deer don't just eat veggie plants. They go after all kinds of plants, shrubs and trees. 2015 Cedaredge Dog Jog and Petpalooza InformationIt's that time of the year...The Dog Jog is just a couple of weeks away. This year it happens on October 31st. The place is Aspen Trails Campground and it starts at 10am. It's the 4th year for this event, and it keeps getting bigger and more fun every year.  There will be a one and two mile fun run/walk with your dog. Be sure to pre-register so you can get a t-shirt, doggie bandanna and a goody bag. You can register the morning of the event, but you may not get all the fun stuff. 2015 Cedaredge Applefest InformationIt's that time of year. The nights are cooling down, and fall is upon us. So it must be time for Applefest. Local businesses and Cedaredge residents are gearing up for a fun and busy weekend. Applefest takes place on the first full weekend in October every year. This year the festival falls on the 3rd and 4th. Here's the music schedule for Saturday and Sunday. Everything starts on Thursday around 5:00. The volunteer fire department has it's annual Chili Cook-off Fundraiser. Expect to wait a while. This event is very popular. The line goes out the door and well into the parking lot of the fire station. Friday in the late afternoon, the town shuts down Main Street and the streets around the park. Freaky Friday Photo...Alien Spacecraft Over CedaredgeThis picture was taken two nights ago on Main Street. It was quite the fall like night with the wind blowing and distant lightning flashing all around us. Really it was kind of like a scene out of a scary Halloween movie. My imagination went a look nuts. I was imagining the cloud was a spaceship looking for a place to land. I grabbed my camera and shot this photo. We all noticed the cloud and how it was lit up in the dark sky. I guess everything must have been aligned just right, and the cloud picked up a reflection of the moon. It was certainly an interesting night on Main Street. Serendipity Sunday...Full Moon Over Cedaredge, COI was with some friends last night for a birthday party when we all noticed the full moon coming up over Cedar Mesa. This was the perfect opportunity for me to try out my new camera. It was a super moon, and this means that the moon is closest to the earth.Next month the full moon will be extra special as it's also a super moon and there will be a lunar eclipse. That will happen on September 27th. It will be visible from most of North America with the best full eclipse viewing happening in the eastern half of the country. I'll need to get a tripod for next month's event. That will surely be something I want to take pictures of. I didn't use a tripod for these pictures. I braced myself up against a deck to try to hold steady. It worked out... 08/30/2015

Serendipity Sunday...Summer's BountyOne of my hobbies is gardening. Just because I live in the mountains doesn't mean I can't grow a good veggie and herb garden. I do and have been for 20 years. The elevation of Cedaredge, CO is 6200 feet above sea level. That means that our nights are already starting to get cooler and we get a later start to the gardening season than those people in lower elevations. You have to adapt to your conditions. In fact the region is known for some great produce like Palisade Peaches and Olathe Sweet Corn (which is patented). Wineries are cropping up all over and the vineyards along with them. There are many wonderful fruit and veggie stands along our roadsides. You Can Lead a Horse to the Bar and Hopefully He'll Lead You Home The wild west spirit is still alive in some parts of Colorado. This photo falls into the category of you know you live in a rural area when...you see horses parked on Main Street. I think the riders went for an evening ride, and stopped at 4Bs Brewpub for a treat. The horses took it all in stride. It did seem like a beautiful night for a ride. Seeing horses tied out on Main Street isn't as common a sight as it use to be. What's really entertaining is when you get the ranchers herding sheep or cows down the highway. The cows and sheep don't stop for a red traffic light, either. They continue to push on through. Serendipity Sunday...Slowing Down Fast Moving WaterToday I had some time to play with my new camera. For those of you that haven't been following the story, several Active Rain members have gotten a Canon SX50. This camera has some amazing features like the 1200mm zoom. The picture quality is excellent, too. Water shots were my objective today, and learning to use the shutter and aperture priority feature. I accomplished both. I took Lucky with me, and we walked the Surface Creek Trail. This was also an opportunity for me to work on Lucky's sit/stay commands. He's doing pretty well, but my photography skills are advancing a bit quicker than he is with staying. In the first picture you see how any camera would see this shot in automatic mode. Foto Friday....You're Finally HomeI've been out of town for a few days. After about the first day, I really start to miss the kids. I know they miss me, too. My kids are two cats and Lucky Dog. Aslan and Chloe were under the good care of a friend of mine. She goes way overboard with them when I'm not here. She also sends me pictures of them, and a little message...something like, "We miss you", or "Hurry home".Lucky, though, gets to go to the kennel. He really does like it. Happy Tails has a fenced  one acre where the dogs and can run and play together. For him that's better than going to the park.
