Grand Mesa/Cedaredge Color Sunday Information 2015The gold rush has started this fall. There's some color on Grand Mesa, but it's not prime yet. The official color Sunday date for this year is September 27th. The Grand Mesa Visitor's Center will be open from 9am to 5pm. You might want to check with Powderhorn Mountain Resort to see if they have any special events planned for Color Sunday. So far the local weather has been beautiful. The days are hot and the nights in town are getting much cooler. This will really start to bring out the color. The weather is what causes the leaves to change color or drop right off the trees. As long as this nice weather holds, we should have a beautiful fall. The aspen trees are plentiful on Grand Mesa. When the fall weather starts, the mesa sides glow y...

Grand Mesa Scenes as Fall is Starting to Make It's Presence KnownI had to work on Grand Mesa yesterday showing cabins. It's always a treat to go up there for business or pleasure. In case you don't know, Grand Mesa is the world's largest flaptop mountain. It stretches for over 30 miles east to west and helps to divide Delta and Mesa County on the north. It is the prominent feature on the Delta County skyline. Highway 65 from Cedaredge over the top to the town of Mesa is a scenic byway. It truly is a beautiful drive. Plan to take your time and stop to get a lot of pictures and maybe explore some of the side roads. The Land O' Lakes Trail is a very short hike with rewarding views looking down on Cedaredge and all the way to the San Juan Mountains. It also gives you a bird's eye view of th...

Can You Find Grand Mesa in this Picture? It's there. It's just buried in a blanket of clouds. Don't strain your eyes. You won't be able to see it. That was the scene at the round corrals on the side of Grand Mesa this afternoon. It was 35 degrees up there. A recent string of storms has really helped the water supply on Grand Mesa. Even with all the rain, though, we are still at only 70% of our normal for snow pack and water/snow equivalency amounts. Our winter snows didn't amount to much, so we're hoping the spring storms will give us the moisture we need. So far so good. Austin Keiser, President of the Grand Mesa Water Conservancy, says the storms have save us from some serious water shortages this summer.  Weather is an amazing phenomena especially in the mountains. It can change on yo...

Dam Open House Peak Reservoir, Grand Mesa, Color Sunday Yes you read the title correctly. There is going to be an open house at the new dam for Peak Reservoir. While you are taking your Color Sunday drive on Grand Mesa stop by Peak Reservoir and check out the new dam. The open house starts at 2PM. The Grand Mesa Water Conservancy District has been working on this project for four years, and they are dam proud of it. (The pun is intended and I do know how to spell the bad word). The Conservancy District wants to show you how your tax dollars are being spent.  In Western Colorado...water is a big deal. On Grand Mesa we have over 300 lakes and reservoirs that store water for domestic use, agriculture use in the form of irrigation water and for recreational purposes. The Conservancy basical...

2014 Grand Mesa 100 Endurance Race Grand Mesa, CO The Grand Mesa 100 is a true test of endurance. This is not for the faint of heart. There are three races involved and the distances are 60K, 50 mile and 100 mile. Most of the races are run at over 9,200 feet in elevation. That's 9,200 feet above sea level. The air is thin that high up. For most people not use to the elevation, it's hard enough just to hike one of the trails.  If you would like to watch this race, go to the race website for more information on where the aid stations are setup. This is probably your best bet for watching the runners.  This year's race starts July 26th. The 60K and 50 milers will have 18 hours to complete the course and the 100 milers have 33 hours to finish. There are plenty of aid stations along the trai...

The Fish are Biting at Island Lake Grand Mesa This report is for June 2014. It's easy to catch the fish from the bank. That's the word from a good friend of mine. He was up there a few days ago and had a blast. He even caught a few Splake.  Island Lake sits high above Cedaredge and Delta County, CO on Grand Mesa. There are over 300 lakes on Grand Mesa. There are Rainbow and Brook Trout in Island Lake and Splake. Most people aren't familiar with Splake. Even seasoned fishermen get confused when they catch one, and they think it's a strange sort of Brook Trout.  Well they are somewhat correct. The Splake is a cross between a Lake Trout and a Brook Trout. Island Lake has been stocked with them periodically over the last ten years or so. The state record Splake came out of Island Lake and w...

The Ute Indian Legend of Grand Mesa Colorado. I thought this story would be interesting to share with my readers. It's not something you hear told much in this area. It's been over ten years since I've heard the story, so I decided to give it some new life.  Only a few hundred years ago the Ute Indians called the Western Slope home. The valleys, canyons and mountains were the places they traveled, hunted and lived on. The Grand Mesa is the prominent feature on the Western Colorado skyline. It's known as the world's largest flat top mountain. It stretches about 40 miles across. Grand Mesa has been called Thunder Mountain. The Ute Indians called it Thingunawat and that means...House of Departed Spirits. Here's why the Utes called it that and why it's also referred to as Thunder Mountain. ...

Colorado's Historic and Scenic Byways are Turning 25. This year, 2014, marks the 25th anniversary of the state's scenic and historic byways. This is a landmark anniversary. Colorado has 25 byways and is celebrating 25 years. For those that don't want to do the math...the byway program started in 1989. Look for special events to be happening in towns across the state.  In Delta County, we are proud to have the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway. Highway 65 was designated a National Scenic Byway in 1996. Cedaredge marks the southern starting point of this trip. It's worth the time to stop in Cedaredge and walk our newly remodeled Main Street. There are several great places for lunch, too. The scenic route travels north out of town and climbs up the side of Grand Mesa. The Mesa, as the locals call it...

Snow Pack Report for the Surface Creek Basin Cedaredge, CO. After last year's winter drought, we are all hoping for a good snow year. The snow pack determines the amount of snow for an area and the moisture content. This information has been tracked for years in a snow pack report for all of Colorado's Basins and for other western states.  In agriculatural areas a good snow pack means there will be plenty of irrigation water for the orchards, corn and hay fields. This picture shows a cherry tree during our last snow fall.  Snow pack for the Surface Creek Area of Delta County is measured on Grand Mesa. Measurements are taken at Mesa Lakes at 9900 feet, and Park Reservoir at 10,000 feet.  Here is the report from 1/1/2014 from Mesa Lakes. Snow depth is 29 inches. Water depth is measured at...

Powderhorn Mountain Resort to Open Early...WOO HOO. Mother Nature is playing nice...at least as far as the local skiers are concerned. Early and heavy winter snows on Grand Mesa mean the Powderhorn Mountain Resort will be opening early. The 2013-2014 ski season is almost here! Several early storms have left over two feet of snow in some places on Grand Mesa. More snow is expected this week. Reports are saying up to another two feet on Grand Mesa. The powder should be deep and great. On November 22 resort officials reported on the resort Face Book page the area was getting snow...and a lot of it. Originally opening date was going to be December 12th. It's that time of year for fun in the sun and snow. Powderhorn Mountain Resort has a full calendar of events planned for this season...with...
