Every once in a while my husband feels the need to 'slay a dragon'. Last year that meant all guys, all motorcycles, lots of sun, lots of dirt: adventure Colorado style. It started out a bit rocky as my dear husband actually forgot his helmet at home. Fortunately, the group of 'dudes' had not been far, so that I could still bring it to him. Needless to say lots of firendly harassment by me as well as the other guys followed. Tim took it very bravely and patiently. As you can see the weather was beautiful and the scenery breathtaking. Maybe a trip you should add to your off road bucket list? The official trip (after several campouts) started in Leadville, and lead over Mosquito Pass into Fairplay then a loop on the road back to Leadville. The video clip, really isn't a clip. 10 minutes co...

The 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale was developed out of the need for soldiers to be prepared for winter warfare prior to the US entry into World War II.  Soldiers that had been stationed at Fort Snelling in my hometown of Minneapolis were acclimated to the cold Minnesota winters, but they had no training in mountainous terrain.  The US government, at the urging of the American Alpine Club, began training troops of the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale in the Eagle Valley of Colorado.  Primary training was in mountaineering, endurance, cross country skiing, down hill skiing, rock climbing and combat.  By 1943, Camp Hale had a full division of 14,000 troops creating the Mountain Training Center at Camp Hale which is in close proximity to Leadville, CO. The National Ski Association ...

Leadville Colorado personifies the wild wild west!  It is the highest incorporated city in the continental U.S.  It was originally called "Cloud City". It's easy to imagine yourself in another time as you walk down the streets of Leadville.  It's an area so steeped in history that you can almost feel the ghosts of the past walking beside you. If you watch alongside the road to Leadville from Buena Vista, you can still see the old stagecoach road. Just off to the side of the old stagecoach road there is a grave marker.  In 1879 gold was shipped via stagecoach between Leadville and Buena Vista, the times and dates of the shipments was kept secret, however the coach was still being robbed quite often. Local officials were stumped as to how the robber knew when the shipments were going out....
