Salida CO Whitewater Competition: Fibark...Same Hole, Different Day   The Arkansas River that runs though Salida Colorado is known for its whitewater. Locals kayak on the rapids year round, even in town. It is common to see them playing in the waves (the one you see to the right is one of them) and running the slalom course, getting ready for summer competitions.    FIBARK (First in Boats on the Arkansas) is our annual competition and celebration and draws boaters from all over the world. Things to do in Salida Colorado: Float the River   The Arkansas River runs right through downtown Salida. We have a couple of restaurants that overlook the river with all its activity. On any given day, you can see guided raft trips swing through, paddle boards, white water kayaks, inner tubes, and fishing boats pass by.  From May 15 to August 14, the runoff is very high so the only boats you will see are white water kayaks, rodeo kayaks and paddle boards or SUPS (Stand up paddle boards). The skill level of the boaters is high. The various whitewater boats have many different names but here are a few ad names that I use.   Mountain Biking in Salida Colorado: A Single Track to Paradise   For many who live in Salida, mountain biking in the summer and downhill skiing in the winter is a way of life.    For those who don't live here, it is a destination place to play.   For others, it is a place to pick up the family and move to... many families have moved to the area because of the outdoor lifestyle. Roland Cook's Artocade Passes through Salida and causes a Stir Roland Cook, a former art teacher with a wacky sense of humor, moved to Trinidad Colorado. When asked by the city to help get Trinidad on the map, he put on his out of the box thinking cap and came up with an Artocade. He knew of a woman, Rebecca Bass who teaches in the inner city Houston schools and has her students create an artcar a year.  Now that is right up Roland's alley.  Between wanting to make it fun and wanting to help Trinidad be found, Artocade was born in 2013.  He was passing through Salida Colorado Friday and was raising quite a ruckus.
