Steamboat Springs, located in the northwestern section of the state of Colorado, is renowned for its many winter outdoor activities, for instance skiing and snowboarding as well as the scenic beauty of the surrounding national forests. There are various things you can do to relax and also enjoy yourself following a day on the slopes. One of the ways is to check out a number of the natural springs in Steamboat and also the vicinity. The hot springs are amongst the town's main attractions, and it is in reality named immediately after an occurrence associated with the springs. It was stated that trappers who're stopping by the area heard the sound of hot springs. They thought that whatever they had been listening to was a Steamboat engine coming up the Yampa River. The sound ended after t...

Like bacon, snow makes everything better. In Steamboat Springs, snow provides us great skiing, makes the landscape sparkle, and provides the needed water for the rivers. So without snow, we tend to get SAD. The forecast calls for SNOW.  With a slow start, the Steamboat Ski Area got off to a slow start primarily relying on man-made snow. Now I applaud the Steamboat ski area for we were skiing on schedule albeit just a few runs. But now, Old Man Winter has been hanging around Steamboat Springs, Colorado for the last two weeks and that's making everyone happy. Snow is just a good thing. With this added natural snow, Storm Peak opened today.  I'm sure there's some powder turns being cut today. And if we're lucky, there's going to be more powder and tree skiing in the near future. Now this s...

Thankfully, Steamboat Springs is making snow.  If Steamboat Springs didn't have snowmaking, we'd be doing a lot more fishing. My old stomping grounds Crystal Mountain in Washington State is getting dumped on with 28 inches over the last 2 days, here in Steamboat Springs, we're all still doing "the snow dance." Snowmaking is the lifeline to skiing for many Colorado ski resorts this year. Across Colorado, these high pressure weather systems are keeping us out of the trees so far an on groomed runs kept alive by snowmaking.  So far, Steamboat's is off to a slow start this winter. But things will get better.  Now skiing on manmade snow isn't much different. Snowmaking combines water and cold air to produce snow. Here's a great video on how snowmaking works. While here in Steamboat Springs w...

Lack of Snow Affecting Early Season Bookings Good morning and happy Friday to all of my fellow Steamboaters (and the rest of you too)! In coming to the end of yet another week, as well as another November, this unseasonably warm weather has me scratching my head. We're stepping on the heels of December and instead of the snow covered landscape that's typical for this time of year, there's still plenty of grass, some of it even still green, to be seen all over town. What's the deal, Mother Nature? Well, whatever the reason for the bee in her bonnet, Mother Nature's sour attitude hasn't gone unnoticed by those who live outside the 'Boat either. According to a recent article in the Steamboat Today, Lack of natural snow hurts lodging reservations in Steamboat Springs, the lodging barometer...

Over the last 3 months, the average 2-3 bedroom condo for sale at the Steamboat ski area was $356 per square foot. That makes the Trailhead Lodge Auction average price of $331 per square foot look like a great deal. Well, not only does it look like a great deal, but it actually is a great deal. The remaining Wildhorse Meadows and Trailhead Lodge condos will go up for auction next month in Steamboat. A second and hopefully last auction for the remaining Luxury Condos at Trailhead Lodge in Wild Horse Meadows will take place December 15, 2012. It will be held in Steamboat Springs. The last auction, which was held back in May, was well received and now they are looking to sell the remaining units in the auction currently scheduled for next month. Steamboat Springs is renowned for its world-class skiing, and its cowboy culture and western traditions are consistently maintained here. The ranching tradition at the wide open Yampa Valley started in the nineteenth century. It boasts great hot springs and, in truth, the town got its name off one of these springs. Fur trappers in the region heard the effervescent sound and believed that it appeared to be like a steamboat coming down the Yampa River. You will find three hot mineral pools, an Olympic-sized lap pool, kid's pool, fitness center and also a 350 foot waterslide at the Steamboat Health and Recreation Center. The waterslide can be described as an exciting adventure for adults and children. You could dip in the mineral rich waters of one of the three pools which vary in tempera...

During the fall, Colorado's Rocky Mountains completely transform itself from an emerald area of greenery into a rich canvas of shades and hues. The Steamboat OktoberWest was launched by the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association as a way to emphasize the vivid change in seasons as well as to rejoice in the time of the year. The Steamboat OktoberWest maintains Western traditions by exhibiting the traditions of the Yampa Valley and also the excellence of the local products in a fall harvest celebration that's directed at the family. The best of three of the German Oktoberfest customs transpires in this event. Yet, the event adjusts the custom to be able to go well with the western tradition of Steamboat. There is no German beer in this event. Even so, you will find a lot of Rocky M...

Realtors rely on lenders as a crucial part of the transaction. One that I use is Kathryn Pedersen. And here's some sage advice about buying foreclosures and short-sale from Kathryn. I am amazed everyday with the deals that buyers are getting on real estate in our market. The rates are at or below historic lows again, so not only are the prices right, but the resulting payments are also budget friendly. Today’s hot commodities are bank owned or short sale properties. Buying one of these properties presents a different set of challenges; here are a few tips and observations from my experience with lending on Steamboat foreclosures and short-sales.  Be prepared! If you are buying a bank owned property, the bank’s main goal is getting the property off of their books as quickly as possible. ...

It was announced this morning that there will be an Auction for the remaining Luxury Condos at Trailhead Lodge in Wild Horse Meadows.  It is scheduled for Saturday December 15th at 1pm in Steamboat Springs.  This is a great plan that will help this project move forward and will be a good opportunity for people looking for a deal on a condo in Wild Horse Meadows Steamboat.  I'll add more later, but I think this is the right thing for this property and I was happy with how the auction was handled last time by Kennedy Wilson.  My concern last time was that the owners may not have recognized the values of the condos given the number they had left and may not have the proper reserve prices as a result. I was very close on my price predictions last time, I just didn't think they would accept ...

In Steamboat Springs, albeit the high rocky mountains and a destination resort, we are blessed with great mortgage lenders and competitive interest rates. Often, buyers of ski area second homes or a Steamboat investment properties in Steamboat Springs tend to want to work with mortgage lenders located in their home town. But if you look at the rates in Steamboat, they are great. Plus, local lenders know the area and all the developments in Steamboat so that makes it a little easier to get loan approval.                       Take a look at the interest rates in Steamboat Springs, as Tony the Tiger says,"they're great."  What are your local rates? Thanks, Charlie

Snowmaking at Steamboat-Photograph by John F. Russell With a little bit of snow on the ground and Scholarship Day at the Steamboat Ski Area less than a week away, thoughts of the upcoming ski season and, after a winter like last year, snow levels have begun to consume the brains of many of us who have chosen to make our homes here in Steamboat Springs. I even got excited and wrote a blog about our first expected snow of the season back in early October. An article published this morning in the Steamboat Today titled Uncertainty in short-term, long-term forecasts for Steamboat Springs attempts to bring some answers.   According to the article, the long term forecast is presenting some problems for meteorologists attempting to predict just what kind of winter Northwest Colorado has in sto...

Steamboat is proud of its trademark Champagne Powder snow, which generally seems to fall in the ideal quantities at the perfect time. This trademark renders Steamboat a snowboarder's paradise. Shadows, with its steady pitch and also well-spaced aspen trees, is debatably the best tree run in the whole of Colorado. Pioneer Ridge, which happens to be situated below Storm Peak, encourages you to explore. It is a long-run, though, making it essential to do a little hiking. Make sure you remember the Twilight Zone in between the Sunshine and Sundown lifts, a difficult run that has a lot of moguls. For beginning snowboarders, a moving carpet acts as the training area, which happens to be apart from other sorts of traffic so that rookies may start learning on their own. A variety of snowboard ...
