In Steamboat Springs on Tuesday, May 18th the city council voted "yes" to allow redevelopment work at the base of Steamboat Ski Area which will occur this summer. The Steamboat Springs City Council voted too allow $2.5 million in spending for work that can begin as soon as crews are in place. "The vote revives construction plans that were stalled last month by a contentious bid process and default notice from U.S. Bank. That notice put perceptions of the project’s financing on shaky ground and spurred a flurry of negotiations between city staff and bank officials. Those negotiations are continuing and could result in a new deal, new lender or refinancing of the city’s $17.5 million redevelopment loan. A new financing agreement could release additional funds later this summer for further...

We so often talk about remodeling ideas that return the most to you when you become a seller, sometimes it's nice to think, who cares...this is what I really want to do.  Simply stated, people are staying put and want to create more comfortable living spaces .  If you find yourself among those, here are some ideas that, perhaps, won't break your bank but will bring more enjoyment to you in your home. If you are stymied in considering what to do, bring a designer in to help you visualize what may ultimately be a less expensive or less cumbersome solution.  Looking for a change that saves you money in the long run could be enticing and allow you to upgrade windows, hot water or other features to greener choices.  Unfinished basements or attics offer great opportunities to create more livi...

Whether you are living, vacationing or just spending time outdoors in Colorado you need to be aware of where you are actually "bear country". Today, bears are sharing space with a growing human population. Curious, intelligent, and very resourceful, black bears will explore all possible food sources. If they find food near homes, campgrounds, vehicles, or communities, they’ll come back for more. Bears will work hard to get the calories they need, and can easily damage property, vehicles, and homes. Every time the Colorado Division of Wildlife is forced to destroy a bear, it’s not just the bear that loses. We all lose a little piece of the wildness that makes Colorado so special. So please, get the information you need, and share it with your friends, neighbors, and community. Please do ...

The Sanctuary in Steamboat is a small community located between downtown and the ski mountain. A community that truly reflects its name, The Sanctuary is located close to everything, but once home, the isolation and beauty of the neighborhood make you forget everything else. Driving up Steamboat Boulevard, the road that winds through the sanctuary, you are surrounded by views of the mountain and across the valley. And the views are only topped by your close access to, well everything. With a sign that changes with the seasons, ‘Nordic Skiing Touring Center’ or ‘Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Championship Golf Course’ in the summer, you can be cross-country skiing or golfing right out your door. And with trails that travel through the community and eventually lead up to Fish Creek Falls, hiking...

Mountain bike riders in Steamboat Springs are tough. When one trail isn't long enough to fill up the space of a day, local riders combine two or more trails. The Hot Springs to Mad Creek to Red Dirt Trail Loop is more than just a ride - it's three rides combined. A favorite among area locals, this loop spotlights the Strawberry Park Hot Springs, the steep-walled canyon of Mad Creek, and the quiet solitude of the Red Dirt Trail. Each one of these rides can be ridden separately or fashioned into shorter loops. Terrain: Paved road, improved dirt road, and singletrack. Riders encounter rocky singletrack, sand, creek crossings, ruts, and soft forest singletrack.

A Colorado Climate Center visitor came to Steamboat Springs last month to discuss with master gardeners and their guests about our local climate. When it comes to home gardeners it is important because our climate dictates which plants will flourish and which ones will take more work to keep healthy. Routt County in Colorado boasts some of the highest city elevations, with our complex mountain topography, we experience some of the largest seasonal changes in the world. Steamboat is one of the snowiest places in the Northern Hemisphere, with relatively little variation from year to year. We compare our weather to that of the Tibetan Plateau, which shares our 40 to 41 degree latitude. Luckily for us and thanks to a consistent moisture source — the Pacific Ocean — we live in the wettest a...
