Understanding Equal Opportunity in Housing Recently, on a listing, one of the sellers made the comment that they had to be selective when selling their home to not offend their neighbors. This was so wrong on so many levels, that I just had to stop and explain the legal rights and obligations when buying or selling real estate. I started to explain that their first obligations were to themselves and not their friends and neighbors. If we priced the home at a fair market value for conditions, and we were fortunate to get an interested and qualified buyer, nothing else was important. Whether or not the neighbors liked the new owners was not relevant, especially as they definitely would not be as concerned with them if their own homes were being sold.
