Is the New Year! and is also the time for a many of home improvement projects. For your home improvement projects, always look for an electrician in Greenwichto ensure the safety of homes and of people living on it. One responsibility of electricians is to prepare the electrical installation layout plan of a house especially if it is newly built. Home Depot offers cheap prices and convenient hours.  Sometimes you have to finish a project and need a can of paint at 5 PM on a Sunday.  In that situation you have no choice but to head to Home Depot.  The problem I have with Home Depot is that the quality is not the same as products from other stores. Some vendors whose products are carried by Home Depot have told me that the store does not like raising its prices.  So, a company initially offers a quality product and gives the store a huge discount because of the large sales volume.  Over time, the manufacturing costs of a product might go up.  Since the store does not like raising its prices, the manufacturer is forced to absorb those additional costs.  After a while, they can no longer continue absorbing those prices and has no c...

Selling Your Home Should You Improve or Not? For sellers this is a huge point for consideration and as a Realtor® you should be ready to discuss this with your clients along with estimated costs involved and potential return of investment. Buyers come in two groups:- The group who wants a bargain and are willing to trade hard work for sweat equity. The group who wants move-in ready. If the seller would prefer not to spend any money then this is will equate to a tradeoff in list price. But sometimes the tradeoff is uneven and a few hundred dollars spent on improvements and maintenance might improve the sales price by thousands. The other point is the sellers time frame, in general move in ready homes tend to sell more quickly. With a little research and some quotes the seller might find ...

Is your sofa too fat for your space? Is her footprint creating a tight squeeze in your space.  Let's put your sofa on a diet and slenderize her profile. For this Westchester County interior decorator and designer, most sofas I encounter don't warrant the trouble or the expense.  But for a recent Greenwich Connecticut client, reupholstering her costly 8-way-hand-tied piece was definitely the right way to go.  This classic English rolled arm sofa was the perfect place to lie down and read a book, but her arms were bulky and over padded and the busy floral print fabric she was wearing was NOT her most flattering look!   In this mid-century modern designed home, furnished as an English farmhouse, a stunning collection of antiques and artwork were being overwhelmed by this sofa's girth!   I ...

I was at a customer’s house in Greenwich, CT last week when he was complaining that his furnace was not getting power. I started at the electrical panel and tested each circuit breaker. Each breaker had the right voltage, so I know the problem was not outside the house, and not in the panel.  He had some work done in his basement recently and was concerned that a worker had cut a power cable by accident.  The problem was somewhere within the house.      The next step was to check the most obvious causes.  In most cases, the National Electric Code (NEC) requires two shut off switches for a furnace.  One switch is on the unit so a technician can turn it off when servicing the equipment.  The other switch is somewhere close to the living area, typically on the top of the stairs going to th...

Greenwich Audubon NATIVE PLANT SALE 2014. The order timeline has been extended to May 1st for the first Native Plant Sale offered by the Greenwich Audubon in Connecticut. Native plants gardens are an attractive, sustainable food supply for birds, native pollinators and other wildlife throughout the year. Using Native plants in your garden is a win-win for the homeowner, wildlife and local environment because:- They use less water than most non-native plants once established. Are better adapted to local climates. Often require less fertilizer, thus helping protect water quality. Need fewer pesticides since they resist native pests and diseases better. Are hosts for native insects which are the main food for baby birds. Provide food and shelter for local birds & wildlife.   To view a list...

The real estate market of my youth was quiet and gentle with lots old family firms.  Many fiercely talented women - Marge Rowe, Sally O'Brien and June Peters owned or were partners in top firms.  Slowly their companies faded away or were absorbed into larger entities.  Preferred Properties, my former company, was acquired by Coldwell Banker, Simpson, Peters was folded into Country Living and Sally O'Brien sold to Prudential - the times were hard for independents.  As the market tightened and business changed other smaller firms left or were sold.  Sotheby's acquired Cleveland, Duble & Arnold, a historic Greenwich firm.  Greenwich Fine Properties, a wonderful high-end boutique, merged with Coldwell Banker Previews.   A company changed names after a sale - Prudential became Berkshire H...

After my post last week about USB receptacles (here), I wanted to provide a helpful hint about plugging in USB devices.  USB cords, like any other plug can only be inserted one way.  The problem is that we always try to plug them in the wrong way first.  Then, we rotate them around and eventually are able to connect them. To solve this problem, I suggest cutting a small square of self adhesive Velcro strips (available at hardware stores or craft store) on the bottom of ech USB cord you own.  That way, you can feel the Velcro with your finger and know instantly which side goes down.  This is perfect for car chargers because sometimes the lighting in your car is less than ideal, especially at night.

3D printing is a new type of technology that is revolutionizing the way we think about our world.  The company leading the way is Makerbot, which manufactures the 3D printers and scanners.  The company has three stores, one of them being in Greenwich, CT.  If you are anywhere nearby that is one retail shop not to be missed.     I recently stopped in to see this technology in person.  For those of you that unfamiliar with the concept, a 3D printer nozzle moves to one location and puts a tiny dot of melted plastic, then another spot and puts a dot.  The printer head keeps moving until it forms an object.  Each layer is the thickness of two sheets of paper.  The technology is amazing because it has the capability to create objects that cannot be machined, like a hollow sphere.  In the stor...

USB Outlets are the Coolest Electrical Outlets in Greenwich CT 06830   USB outlets are a new type of electrical receptacle becoming more and more prevalent in Greenwich, CT.  In this continually connected society that we live in, we are constantly using our smart phones. We use our phones as GPS devices, Internet hotspots, video cameras, remote controls and hundreds of other uses.  The problem is that all those features and apps draw more power and leave us constantly trying to charge our devices.  Whenever I go to an airport, I see passengers getting off a plane and immediately trying to charge their electronic devises in any outlet they can find, even if the outlet is not in a convenient location.    Luckily, there is a new type of outlet available with a built-in USB port.  The USB r...
