Remembrance of 9/11 in Manchester   Tomorrow is the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and terrorist hijackings of the commercial flights.  People all over the country will be reliving memories of the attacks, the emotions, and the after-effects of the day, finding much of it still incomprehensible.   Manchester CT will be officially dedicating a steel beam from the World Trade Center that is part of the 9/11 memorial to the 343 firefighters who died in trying to rescue people from the doomed buildings.  The beam was from the North Tower and weighs about 4800 pounds; it is not part of the Manchester CT Firefighters Memorial Garden at the Fire Station on Tolland Turnpike.   Here is a great video created by Meghan Moore which tells the story b...

Manchester CT Market Report ~ May 2011 This has been a busy spring market in general, and Manchester  has posted gains over the April market report.  During May 2011, there were 33 closed sales, compared to 23 in April 2011.  The median price in May was $175,000, compared to $155,000 in April 2011.  In addition, the median list price to sales price ratio was 97.3 in May compared to 96.8 in April.  When we look at May 2011 compared to May 2010, however, we see expected drops in both the number of sales and the median price.  Last year saw a sales frenzy though as people were trying to meet the deadline for the homebuyers' tax credits.  Fortunately, we have only one more month of very skewed information to include in the comparisons! During the previous May, there were 54 closed sales wit...

Wickham Park in Manchester CT was named "Best Garden and Picnic Park" by Yankee Magazine!   My favorite park in the state was selected by Yankee Magazine as the "Best Garden and Picnic Spot!"  I have always thought that Wickham Park was the best-kept secret, but the word is out now.    With around 250 acres of expansive lawn, specialty gardens, walking paths, picnic areas, a bird sanctuary, and a new sensory garden, the park is a respite from everyday stresses.   Each year, the dedicated staff of Wickham Park painstakingly tends to the gardens and plans for new gardens and rejuvenation.  Over the past few decades, they have added a wetlands garden with decking for walking, the new sensory garden, a rose garden, an English garden surrounding a gazebo for weddings, a reception area for ca...

Wine Tasting at Adams Mill Restaurant ~ May 16, 2011 at 6:30   My favorite wine shop, Manchester Wine and Liquors, is holding its monthly wine tasting at Adams Mill Restaurant on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 6:30.  I don't usually post about these wine tastings because they are usually sold out within a day or so of their being announced, but for some reason there are still seats available for tomorrow's tasting. Only members of the Wine Club may register, but you can sign up to be a Wine Club member for free so just put your name in their database and you will be all set.  Every member can also bring one guest.
