Welcome to Charming Southport, Connecticut! I love running because it forces me to slow down life's hectic pace, gather my thoughts and really take in the sights of the beautiful area in which I live (Fairfield County, CT). On a recent Thanksgiving Day morning, my family and I participated in the annual 5 mile road race through part of Connecticut's Gold Coast. I was captivated by the picturesque, seaside village of Southport. I returned on a sunny, summer day to take another look. Just over an hour's train ride from Manhattan, Southport, settled in 1639, offers a quintessential coastal New England vibe. Volunteering for the Pequot Yacht Club 2011 Invitational RegattaThe summer sun was bright and strong this morning, as sailors aged 12-15 years prepared for the Invitational Regatta hosted by the Pequot Yacht Club in Southport, CT. This invitational regatta is the second oldest running junior regatta on Long Island Sound. It was started in 1954.This year saw the introduction of something new: a collaboration between Pequot and Sailors for the Sea, an ocean conservation organization. Setting this as a Clean Regatta means not only best efforts at recycling effort, but also distributing water to each sailor in insulated stainless steel bottles instead of plastic ones, which can easily fly overboard and cause problems with marine life. The Pequot Library hosted a great event this evening as part of their "Meet the Author" Series. Benjamin Wallace was at the library to discuss his best seller "The Billionaire's Vinegar". The event drew a crowd of over 130 people! Ben Wallace told one of the director's of the library that the largest attendance he had at one of these events was 130 and I think Southport beat that  easily.   The author discussed the early stages of his project and what his inspiration was in choosing his subject. He gave a background on three of the main characters  and read a couple of excerpts from the book. "The Billionaire's Vinegar" was based on a true story surrounding the mystery of the most expensive bottle of wine sold at auction.
