A few years ago, I took some amazing photos of the elephants at the National Zoo.  Unfortunately, the files got lost when I accidentally deleted them from an old computer.  So today, I grabbed my camera and headed back to the elephant run at the zoo.  But guess what?  This mural was all I could find!So where were they?  There are supposed to be six elephants living in the Elephant Trails exibit, and after walking for what seemed like miles, I figured they must all be inside, maybe eating their elephant chow!  Oh well.

This afternoon, I visited the cheetahs at Washington's National Zoo.  There are two cats currently at the Cheetah Conservation Station, Justin and Bakari, but only one was accepting visitors.   The area is quite large to give them plenty of room to run - something cheetahs are very good at.  And the best time to visit is during their morning feeding time when they put on a great show. The National Zoo is on Connecticut Avenue, just below the Cleveland Park Metro Station.  Just click this link to find more information if you'd like to plan a visit.

This afternoon, a message came over Crestwood list serve alerting us to a surprising escape.  Rusty, a year old red Panda who just moved here from a zoo in Nebraska, was let out or got out of his little habitat When zookeepers stopped by with his breakfast, they discovered he was gone.  Since red pandas are known to hang out on high tree limbs when the weather is warm, they initiated an unsuccessful search of the trees along the Asia Trail. So the zoo issued an APB to the nearby neighborhoods, including Crestwood, just in case he made a major escape.  Then, early this afternoon, they found the little fellow in Adams Morgan on 20th Street.  A neighbor who had actually seen the red pandas at the zoo recognized him, and before long, he was in custody.  He's spending the night resting while ...

OK, your children won't be able to pet the pandas or get into any of the animal cages, but they will during this summer, be able to learn a lot about the animals'  habits and habitats.  Here are a few of the summer adventures the National Zoo is offering: The Summer Safari is offered to children entering kindergarten through seventh grade, and they are in eight one-week segments.  And each one is designed to be age appropriate for the particular grade levels of the children.  Many of the segments are already filled up, and the others are booking up quickly, so this is something you'll want to investigate quickly if you think your children would love it. The FONZ Nature Camp is for young naturalists between 5th and 10th grades.  These are overnight camps held in the beautiful Shenandoah...

National Zoo's Lemur Falls On last weekend's visit to the National Zoo's Zoo Lights, I noticed a waterfalls that I'd not noticed on daytime visits.  So who lives here?  Well, the lemurs.  With all the lights and noise, I wonder how the little guys are sleeping.    If you are planning a move to or from the Washington, DC area, I can help!  I am licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.  Email me at Housepat@mac.com, or call 202-549-5167. Last night turned out to be the perfect time to visit the National Zoo to enjoy this year's Zoo Lights. The weather was almost balmy, and there won't be too many more nights like that for a while.  There were all kinds of animals.  While the National is pretty non-partisan, they had two political animals in lights:  One a donkey and another big elephant.    This is a fun evening for children of all ages.  The zoo will stay open until 9:00 pm until December 31st, and will be closed on Christmas Eve and Chrstmas Day.    If you are planning a move to or from the Washington, DC area, I can help!  I am licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.  Email me at Housepat@mac.com, or call 202-549-5167.
